Subjection (How and Why) Part 2

“to place under, subordinate…a military term, to rank under Causes one to yield, submit, obey by surrendering self to the established order Subjection occurs for two reasons: – Due to a role, work, position or rank of another – As a voluntary yielding of love It is necessary for harmony, contentment peace and unity with God and in relations with others 2 Subjection Part 2

Subjection Qualities of faith and character that are essential to properly be in subjection – HOW to be in subjection Some of the results of subjection – WHY we must be in subjection 3 Part 2

HOW? What is needed to be in subjection Respect for authority – Living under authority is the essence of subjection, Jno. 13:16-17 – Jesus, Jno. 14:28; 8:28-29 – At the cross, Acts 8:32-33 – The Roman centurion, Matt. 8:9 4 Part 2

Respect for authority is seen when we submit ourselves: – To God’s word (Christ), Lk. 6:46 – In the home (in love and service), Eph. 5:22-25 – To government (for conscience sake), Rom. 13:5 – To employer (as to the Lord), Col. 3: HOW? What is needed to be in subjection Part 2

Love for others – We submit when God says to for love’s sake “In love”, Rom. 12:10 (Eph. 5:21) Yielding for love’s sake, Phil. 2:1-4 Helps prevent sin, 1 Cor. 6:7-8 Jesus our supreme example, 1 Pet. 2: HOW? What is needed to be in subjection Part 2

A servant heart, Matt. 20:25-28 – Greatness is defined by submissively serving others – Greatness is not defined by others submissively serving us – Servant heart is a humble heart, Matt. 23:11-12 Serving brethren, 1 Pet. 5:5 Serving spouse, parent, gov’t, God, etc. 7 HOW? What is needed to be in subjection Part 2

Willingness to obey – Christ’s submission to the Father is distinguished by His obedience, Phil. 2:8 – Obedience is central to subjection (to surrender ourselves), 1 Pet. 3:4-6 – Humility is central to obedience, Phil. 2:8 Difficulty being in subjection means difficulty being obedient to God, Gal. 2:20; Lk. 9:23 Obedience: Matt. 7:21; Titus 2:5; 2:9; Eph. 6:1 8 HOW? What is needed to be in subjection Part 2

Choosing to be in subjection, Matt. 11:28-30 – God wants (and will only accept) voluntary subjection – not forced compliance, Josh. 24:15 – We must choose! 1 Kgs. 18:21 9 HOW? What is needed to be in subjection Part 2

WHY? Results of being in subjection United churches, Phil. 2:1-4 – Can only “be of the same mind” by subjecting ourselves to each other – Yield up a liberty in order to benefit another, 1 Cor. 8:13 10 Part 2

WHY? Results of being in subjection Healthy, godly families – Instead of divorce: Leadership that serves and subjection that respectfully obeys – Instead of neglect: Surrender self-interest – Instead of rebellious children: Teach and learn respect for authority by obedience 11 Part 2

WHY? Results of being in subjection The salvation of others, 1 Pet. 3:1-2 – Influence others to respect and submit to authority when they see you doing so – Our subjection to God’s will on being in subjection helps save others! Our own salvation, Matt. 10:37-39 – Complete subjection to Jesus 12 Part 2

Jas 4:7 Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Jas 4:8 Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Jas 4:9 Lament and mourn and weep! Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. Jas 4:10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up. 13 Subjection Part 2
