Presentation transcript:

 Matter is classified by its chemical and physical properties.

 Physical Property: a condition or quality of a substance that can be observed or measured without changing the identity of the substance. Color Texture Odor (smell) Size Shape Any metric measurement (mass, volume, temperature, pressure, etc.)

Density Conductivity Boiling point Melting point Malleability Ductility Magnetism

 Physical Change: a change in the appearance of a substance in which the identity does not change. An easily reversed change Changes in: shape, size, mass, volume, temperature, pressure, etc. Changes in state of matter: SolidLiquidGas Melting Vaporizing / Boiling Subliming Condensing Freezing Depositing

 Chemical Property: a condition or quality of a substance that can be only observed when it changes into a different substance. Reactivity Stability Flammability Toxicity

 Chemical Change: a change of a substance into a different substance with different properties, the identity does change. Cannot be reversed 5 evidences of a chemical change:  Color change  New odor (smell)  Release of energy as heat or light  Gas produced, seen as bubbles in a liquid  Formation of a precipitate (solid formed from 2 liquids), seen as “cloudiness” in a liquid.
