Gearing up for finals

Final Exam Schedule  December 18 Period 1 Final  Shortened schedule periods 2 – 7  December 19 Periods 2, 3, 4 Final  Half day of school  December 20 Periods 5, 6, 7 Final  Half day of school  Winter break December 21 – January 6

How to study?  Cram at the last minute  Stay up all night the night before  Osmosis (sleep on your textbook)  Download the information onto your i-pod and listen to it while you sleep

What to do day of the exam?  Eat lots of sugar the morning of the exam  Bring absolutely nothing with you to take the exam. Who needs a pencil?  Show up late  Skip the exam because you are not prepared.

NOT !

Getting Started for Finals  Find out from your teacher what material will be covered.  Is it cumulative?  How many points is it worth?  What percentage of your grade is the final?  Is there a study guide?  Can you use a notecard?  Is there a take home portion of the exam?  Is the final a project or presentation?

How to Study  Make notecards  Study with a friend  Complete the study guide  Is the study guide worth points?  Formulate a study group with your classmates

When to Study  Look at the material daily for a few minutes  Information needs to be in your long term memory; hence, study a little every day  Know yourself, what time of day is best for you? After school? After dinner? Before bed?

Where to Study  In your bedroom  At the library  At the kitchen table  Some place quiet (away from distractions, like the tv)

The Real Deal  Get a good night’s sleep before your exam  Eat breakfast the morning of your exam, include protein (i.e. eggs, peanut butter, Greek yogurt)  Be on time  Be prepared  Writing utensil  Paper  Calculator (if allowed)  Note card (if allowed)  Study guide (if allowed)

Resources  Take advantage of tutoring center  Take advantage of academic travel  Next week Thursday December 13  See your teacher ahead of time for a pass  Know when your teacher is available if you have questions or need extra help.  Before/after school, planning time
