It’s all about SPACE! Big Idea: The universe is filled with galaxies that include billions of stars that each have their own solar system.

Different words are used to describe the motion of objects in space. Read the following descriptions and decide which best describes the meaning of the words rotate and revolve. A.Rotate means spin; Revolve means spin B.Rotate means spin; Revolve means orbit C.Rotate means orbit; Revolve means orbit D.Rotate means orbit; Revolve means spin

 The spinning of Earth on its axis is called its rotation. (1 rotation equals 24 hours, so 1 rotation = _______ )  We experience day and night because as the Earth spins, part of the Earth is facing toward the Sun, and part is facing away from the Sun.  The orbit of earth around the sun is called its revolution. (1 revolution = 365 1/4 days, so 1 revolution = _______)  What do we do with the extra 1/4 days? What do we know so far?

 We experience seasons because the Earth’s axis is tilted as it revolves around the sun, so different parts of the planet get different amounts of sunlight at different times of the year. Sunlight strikes the Earth most directly at the equator.  An equinox occurs when a place on earth experiences equal amounts of daylight and darkness. (12 hours each )  A solstice occurs when the sun reaches its greatest distance north or south of the equator each year. During the summer solstice in the northern hemisphere, it experiences the longest amount of daylight hours. Did you know…
