Diliff. Les Invalides Photograph. Google Maps.

It was created in 1670 by King Louis XIV as a shelter for old soldiers The soldiers were given a comb, wooden spoon, knife, uniform and shoes. Smoking and women were not allowed at all in any part of Les Invalides. Married soldiers could sleep out twice a week, and everybody had to go to Church on Sunday. It was designed by Jules Hardouin-Mansart WHO CREATED IT? King Louis XIV. N.d. Photograph. Awakening-Healing

The first stone was laid in 1671 and it was not until 1674 that the first soldiers were allowed in, and were received in person by Louis XIV It was not fully finished until 1676 WHEN WAS IT BUILT? Les Invalides. N.d. Photograph. Travels with Headcase,

Today Les Invalides is a museum, church and hospital all in one. The hospital at Les Invalides is still in use as a paraplegic center and retirement home, although fewer than 100 soldiers live there. To get to the hospital, you use the northern entrance. WHAT IS IT USED FOR? HOSPITAL Bogdan Migulski. The Grand Cour d'honneur. N.d. Photograph. World Site Guides

The Invalides includes both the Musée de l'Arme and Musée des Plans-Relifs. They’re both historical military museums that display things such as armor and cannons, and sections on the first and second World Wars. It is located in the courtyard. Opened in 1677 as a chapel and place for the soldier’s to attend mass and pray. It has a noticeable military background and one of the largest organs in Paris. It is noted for its light atmosphere and large amounts of white marble. CHURCH C APVG. Église Saint-Louis des Invalides. N.d. Photograph. World Site Guides

The Church at Les Invalides also has another major attraction: It is home to the tomb of Napoleon. He rests in a circular uncovered crypt, high up on a green granite pedestal. There’s a nest containing six coffins up on the pedestal along with Napoleon’s sarcophagus, which contain his brothers, son, and a few who fought beside him. NAPOLEON Napoleon's Tomb. N.d. Photograph. Paris Logue

Les Invalides is in central Paris, France in the 7th arrondissement. The best stations to get off of if you’re taking the metro are La Tour- Maubourg (8) or Varenne (13). LOCATION Les Invalides. N.d. Photograph. copyright©hotels-paris-hotels-france.com

Les Invalides started a trend in the European countries, soon after it was built many copied the idea of a building for injured soldiers to stay. The soldiers that lived at Les Invalides worked with each other in workshops, making uniforms. During the Revolution, the church lost many of its banners and treasures because the church was attacked. In 1989, the dome was regilded for the 5 th time. The total added gold weight equaled around ten kilos pure gold. INTERESTING FACTS Gertsch Marine. The Gilded Dome. N.d. Photograph. World Site Guides

Les Invalides is one of the most visited monuments in Paris, and it also is home to the largest number of monuments in one area. People from all over the world come to visit the tomb of Napoleon, one of the most famous men of history. It contains so much history and architecture that it is very valuable to Paris.
