 PLAGIARISM Legalities and Consequences

Definition: 1.Plagiarism is the stealing of someone else’s work or ideas and presenting them as your own. We know it as ‘copying’ or ‘cheating’. The Latin root of the word means kidnapping. 2.Sharing one’s work with other students is also considered an act of plagiarism.

 Now, I need to credit my sources or I will be guilty of PLAGIARISM.  Definitions: 1.Collins English Dictionary, Discovery, ALGONQUIN COLLEGE, Directives & Policies, AA20 (2011/03/30, AC website)

PURPOSE To document the penalties to be imposed for an act of plagiarism

POLICY: (Fine Print)  Algonquin College expects students to follow acceptable standards of academic honesty crucial to the teaching learning process. Academic work submitted by a student is evaluated on the assumption that the work presented by the student is his or her own, unless designated otherwise. Plagiarism constitutes an act of academic dishonesty.

Response to Acts of Plagiarism: Students who commit plagiarism will be subject to disciplinary action.

Response to Acts of Plagiarism: Plagiarism on the part of one or more of the group members may affect the group evaluation, at the discretion of the professor.

Response to Acts of Plagiarism: Any academic sanction imposed as a result of plagiarism is to be kept electronically for a period of one year.

 RESPONSE  PROCEDURE  ACTION  APPEAL

POLICY: (Large Print) At the beginning of each term, students are to submit a declaration attesting that the work they will be submitting will be their own (Appendix 1).

I understand that plagiarism, whether done deliberately or accidentally, is defined as presenting someone else’s work, in whole or in part, as one’s own, and includes the verbal or written submission of another work (for example, ideas, wording, code, graphics, music, and inventions) without crediting that source. This includes all electronic sources (for example, the Internet, television, video, film, and recordings), all print and written sources (for example, books, periodicals, lyrics, government publications, promotional materials, and academic assignments), and all verbal sources (for example, conversations and interviews). I understand that the facilitation of plagiarism, that is, one student sharing his or her work with other students, is also considered an act of plagiarism. I understand that contravening Algonquin College Policy AA 20 - Plagiarism will result in an academic sanction(s) as described in this directive. More about The Commons - A new way to share photos on Flickr The Commons was launched on January , when we released our pilot project in partnership with The Library of Congress. Both Flickr and the Library were overwhelmed by the positive response to the project! Thank you! The program has two main objectives: To increase access to publicly-held photography collections, and To provide a way for the general public to contribute information and knowledge. (Then watch what happens when they do!)
