What is ENERGY STAR? ENERGY STAR is a government-backed program that helps consumers identify energy-efficient products. ENERGY STAR qualified products: Save energy Save money Save the environment

About ENERGY STAR The ENERGY STAR mark ranks among the highest level of influence on product purchase among all consumer emblems, similar in ranking to the Good Housekeeping Seal.

In 2010 alone, Americans—with the help of ENERGY STAR—saved nearly $18 billion on their energy bills and prevented greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to the annual emissions of 33 million vehicles. Consumer awareness and desire for efficiency savings is high More than 40% of U.S. households knowingly purchased an ENERGY STAR-labeled product in the past year. Of these purchasers: About 75% report the label as influential in their purchasing decision. About 80% report they are likely to recommend products that have earned the ENERGY STAR to friends. –29% of these households reported they were "extremely" likely to recommend ENERGY STAR-labeled products. ENERGY STAR Sales Value Source : 1) ENERGY STAR Overview of 2010 Achievements, March ) EPA Office of Air and Radiation, Climate Protection Partnerships Division. 5 Why Buy ENERGY STAR? Save energy ENERGY STAR qualified light bulbs use about 75% less energy & produce about 75% less heat than traditional incandescent models High quality performance ENERGY STAR qualified light bulbs must meet strict quality and efficiency standards Many Options Qualified bulbs are available in a variety of shades of white light, ranging from warm to cool light appearance, which allows customization of mood in a space Both compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFL) and integral LED bulbs can earn the ENERGY STAR

ENERGY STAR Qualified CFLs Qualified CFLs are different than non-qualified CFLs because they: ―Must meet 18 stringent performance criteria established by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ―Including: ―Minimum lifetime and efficacy requirements ―Maximum product start-up and warm-up times ―A two-year warranty for residential use ―Product equivalency claim guidelines ―Color quality and consistency What is efficacy? Efficacy is the measure of lighting efficiency and is calculated by dividing the light output (measured in lumens) by the electricity used (measured in watts). Like miles per gallon, the more lumens per watt (lm/W or lpw), the more you get for your money.

ENERGY STAR Qualified LED Bulbs 7 Qualified LED light bulbs: ―Must meet more than 20 stringent performance criteria established by DOE and EPA ―Including: ―Minimum lifetime and efficacy ―Light distribution and color quality ―Size and shape targets ―Product equivalency guidelines ―A three-year warranty

New ENERGY STAR Light Bulb Specification Combines existing CFL and LED bulb specifications and will also include GU24 bulbs (used in ENERGY STAR qualified fixtures) – Specification development process commenced in 2011 – Specification to become effective in 2012 Visit to: – View each stage of the criteria’s development – Download the latest draft – View comments on each draft 8

Saving Energy = Saving Money Qualified light bulbs provide the same or better light output as incandescent bulbs while using about 75% less energy. Replacing a home’s five most frequently used light bulbs with ENERGY STAR qualified models can save $70 a year in electricity costs. Bulbs that have earned the ENERGY STAR last times longer than traditional bulbs. ENERGY STAR qualified products use less energy and cost less to operate resulting in:

ENERGY STAR Lamp Benefits: Less Heat, More Light ENERGY STAR qualified light bulbs generate about 75% less heat and distribute light more efficiently than standard incandescent bulbs. Incandescent Bulbs CFLs LEDs

ENERGY STAR qualified CFL light bulbs only need to be changed once every 7 years on average, compared with an annual ladder-climb for standard incandescent light bulbs—convenient for hard to reach fixtures. ENERGY STAR Bulb Benefits: Longer Life An ENERGY STAR qualified LED light bulb can last 15,000 – 50,000 hours. That means, based on normal use, a bulb installed in a newborn's nursery won't have to be changed until he or she graduates from college!

Saving Energy Helps Protect the Environment If every American home replaced just one light bulb with an ENERGY STAR bulb, we would save enough energy to light more than 3 million homes for a year, save more than $650 million in annual energy costs, and prevent greenhouse gases equivalent to the emissions from more than 800,000 vehicles. Did You Know? The energy used in the average house can cause twice the greenhouse gas emissions as the average car.

Where to Use ENERGY STAR Lighting? Which Rooms? Family and living room Kitchen Dining room Porch Which Fixtures? Table lamps Floor lamps Wall sconces Pendants Open ceiling fixtures What if you don’t have “On/Off” switches? DimmerLook for the “compatible with dimmer switch” on the bulb. Three-way socket Look for the “compatible with three-way switch” on the bulb. Electronic control Check with the manufacturer of your photocell, motion sensor, or timer. CFL Buying Guide Get the best bang for your buck by installing ENERGY STAR qualified lighting in the fixtures you leave on the longest

ENERGY STAR Light Bulbs: How to Choose ENERGY STAR light bulbs are available in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and applications. Always: – Read the packaging! – Ensure the bulb will work in the appropriate socket – Find your preferred light color (i.e. Warm vs Cool white) – Check the lumen rating (measure of light output) The higher the lumens, the brighter the light Incandescent (Watts) Light Output (lumens) , , ,600

How to Choose the Right Bulb for Your Fixture Did You Know? Only bulbs marked “dimmable” or “three-way” work with those switch types. For recessed cans, only choose bulbs marked “Indoor Reflector” or “For Indoor Use.” Read manufacturer product packaging to ensure that you purchase the appropriate bulb!

ENERGY STAR Light Bulbs: Color & Mood Choosing the right color: – Light color is measured on a temperature scale referred to as Kelvin (K) – Bulbs with lower K have more yellow light – Bulbs with higher K have whiter or bluer light – Most ENERGY STAR qualified bulbs match the color of incandescent bulbs: 2, ,000K. – For a brighter look, find bulbs marked: K for whiter, cool-white light K for bluer, natural light

Create Business Value –More than 80 percent of American households: Recognize the ENERGY STAR label. Have a high or general understanding of the ENERGY STAR label. –Differentiate your organization: Arm your staff with knowledge Provide your customers products of choice Create Social Value –Decelerate climate change by preventing greenhouse gas emissions by reducing energy use with ENERGY STAR qualified products –Lower energy bills for consumers and businesses –Boost your brand’s environmental image ENERGY STAR As Your Sales Partner

ENERGY STAR Lamp Recap ENERGY STAR: The government-backed program dedicated to helping consumers protect the environment through superior energy efficiency. Look for the ENERGY STAR label on qualified CFL and LED light bulbs. Why sell ENERGY STAR qualified bulbs? ENERGY STAR qualified light bulbs use about 75% less energy than incandescent bulbs and save more than $40 or more in energy costs over the lifetime of the bulb. Replacing a home’s five most frequently used incandescent bulbs with ENERGY STAR qualified models can save $70 a year in electricity costs. Qualified light bulbs last up to 10–50 times longer than incandescent bulbs— convenient for hard-to-reach fixtures. Help prevent climate change by reducing the greenhouse gas emissions caused by burning fossil fuels at power plants.
