He has a harmful and unnatural appetite for little girls (who are pure and clean to him), whom he molests. 21. Soaphead’s last name is Church, and he has a reputation for being a religious/mystical figure. He even tries to communicate with God. However, he is responsible for Pecola’s only sinful act (poisoning a dog) and for deluding her into believing it will give her blue eyes. He even claims that he has created something and that God is jealous of him, which most readers would consider the ultimate blasphemy (disrespectful speech against God).

Summer is usually a time of joy and freedom; it makes Claudia think of violent storms and imagining her mother as strong in the face of a tornado she has told her about. 2.She learns of Pecola’s pregnancy through overheard conversations in others’ homes. People do not seem concerned about keeping it a private matter. However, it only becomes meaningful to Claudia when she thinks about it privately and feels sorrow over it. It becomes the most important part of her reality, and her sister’s, that summer. 3.Claudia and Frieda are actually concerned for Pecola and the baby. She contrasts the baby with the white baby dolls these people treasure. Pecola’s baby is real and valuable to them, but not to the adults who feel no compassion for Pecola and her unborn child.
