Why Is Sleeping Important For College Students Developed by Jay Luo with the help of Marc Gardner- Harris

What is your sleeping schedule?  What is the average amount of hours of sleep you get on a regular basis? Why?  Do you know how many hours of sleep per night people is considered healthy for the mind and body?  Can you find better ways to plan a better sleeping schedule?

You are not the only one who is “Sleep Deprived”  According to the website, the average adult sleeps only 6.9 hours a night.  According to sleep statistics from 2002’s Sleep in America Poll, 35 percent of Americans report insomnia every night.  College students are part of the group with only 6.9 hours or less of sleep per night.

How can “Sleep Deprivation” affect your grades?  According to 37 percent of Americans report that sleepiness interferes with daily functions like: work performance, relationships and grades.   Lack of sleep decreases your ability to concentrate and results in more errors in work.   Pulling an all-night cram session can sometimes do more harm than good on your next day exams!.   You tend to not remember anything from the night you studied and also "wiped out" for the next few days.

Steps On How To Sleep Better  Wind Down  Relax 30 to 60 minutes before you go to bed try to avoid over stimulus.  Relax  Listen to some soft music, Take a warm shower and write down a detailed list of what is in your head and worry about the list tomorrow  Avoid  Late night eating and major exercising. Stay away from caffeine, nicotine and alcohol before going to sleep. It can cause restless sleep and frequent waking.

Valuable Tips   Always use common sense. If you have a test the next day, partying the night before and not getting enough sleep is never a good idea.  Using sleep medications without a doctor's recommendation is ill-advised and may do more harm than good.   Taking a "Power Nap", a minute nap during the day, can be very beneficial. It can put you in a better mood. It can refresh you. You may feel sharper and able to concentrate better. However, sleeping more than 80 minutes can hurt your sleeping schedule so WATCH OUT!

 GOOD LUCK and SLEEP TIGHT!!
