1 Sleep Describe why sleep is an important part of your health.
List the effects of sleep deprivation. Compare the amount of sleeps needed for teens differ from adults and children. Identify 2 different types of sleep.

2 Sleep 60% of adults in America experience sleep problems.
Sleep is not just a time out, it is essential for your health and safety. Sleep is needed for the brain to recover. Even mild sleepiness can hurt all types of performance: school, sports, and video games.

3 Sleep Sleep Deprivation: is the lack of sleep. People who are sleep deprived have… Stress related problems: causes life to be more stressful and you to be less productive. Increases your risk to get sick: weakens the immune system. Increases risk for accidents: sleepiness causes lack of concentration and reaction time which can cause dangerous even fatal accidents.

4 Sleep and Teens Teens need 9 hours and 15 minutes of sleep nightly.
Teens need more sleep because of their circadian rhythm is delayed. Your circadian rhythm is the body’s clock for regulating sleeping and waking patterns. Naturally delaying this makes teens want to go to sleep later at night and sleep later into the day. Most adults and children average 8 hours nightly.

5 Tips for Good Sleep 1. Develop a routine. Go to bed and get up at the same time, even on weekends! 2. Exercise every day. The best time is in the late afternoon or early evening, but not too close to bedtime. 3. Limit caffeine. After about lunch time, stay away from coffee, colas, or foods with caffeine. Relax. Avoid heavy reading, studying, and computer games within 1 hour of bedtime. 5. Say no to all-nighters. Staying up all night, even to study for an exam, will disturb your sleep pattern and your ability to function the next day. 6 . Your bed is for sleep. Do not eat, watch TV, or study in bed.

6 Stages of sleep The 2 stages of sleep are called NREM and REM sleep.
NREM: Nonrapid eye movement…REM: rapid eye movement…In the beginning of a sleep cycle, we go into NREM sleep. The body recovers from the stress of the day’s activities during this part of the sleep cycle. Brain activity is at its lowest during NREM sleep. The REM portion of the sleep cycle is called dream sleep. It first happens about 1.5 hours into sleep. REM sleep got its name from the rapid movement of the eyes during this phase of sleep. During a normal sleep cycle, periods of NREM sleep alternate with periods of REM sleep. Both types of sleep are essential in helping us lead healthy, active lives.

7 Sleep Disoredrs Insomnia: the inability to sleep, even if you are physically exhausted. Caffeine, alcohol, smoking, stress, and lack of exercise are all common causes of insomnia. Sleep Apnea: a serious sleeping disorder in which there are interruptions in normal breathing patterns during sleep. These interruptions can damage the heart. This is more common with people who are obese.
