Terms and Places Islam is the majority religion of this area. Arabic is the majority language of this area. Suez Canal connects Mediterranean with the Indian Ocean. OPEC is the Organization for Petroleum Exporting Countries. Israel is the nation that is the exception. The Atlas Mountains lie on the northwest corner of Africa.

North Africa and the Arabian Peninsula are united by a common language.

Arabic is written from right to left. Written Arabic is alphabetic, meaning it has a symbol for each sound.

Terrain Regions of North Africa and the Arabian Peninsula Atlas Mts. & Coast Mesopotamia Arabian Deserts Sahara Desert Nile River and Delta Terrain Regions of North Africa and the Arabian Peninsula Three fertile areas And Two desert areas

Atlas Mts. & coast Morocco. The coast near Tripoli The Atlas Mountains.

Sahara Desert Atlas Mts. & Coast The hammada are rocky plains. Old volcanic rock An erg is a sea of dunes. The Sahara desert is the largest in the world after Antarctica. Very few people live here. The desert has several types of terrain. An oasis is a small source of water in the desert. Knowing the location of oases is vital for crossing the desert alive.

Sahara Desert Nile River and Delta Atlas Mts. & Coast Annual flooding brings new soil onto the land around the river. The Nile Delta is the most fertile area in the region. 95% of Egyptians live here.

Arabian Deserts Sahara Desert Atlas Mts. & Coast Arabian Deserts Sahara Desert Nile River and Delta The Nefud is a stony desert to the north The “Empty Quarter” is a desert of sand in the south. It contains some of the deepest sand in the world, sometimes 600 feet deep. The Najd is a plateau that offers some grazing.

The Sahara Desert is almost empty of people The people of north Africa and the Arabian Peninsula live along the coast and along the Nile. An important exception would be Riyadh, the largest city in Saudi Arabia.

How does the oil in the Middle East compare to other parts of the world?

One important exception in this region is the tiny country of Israel.

Israel is not a Muslim state. It is a Jewish state. However, not everyone that lives here is Jewish. There is no oil or petroleum in Israel. The people of Israel do not speak Arabic; they speak Hebrew.

The Hebrew Language is also written alphabetically.

This makes some Jewish Israelis angry. This is the Dome of the Rock. It is a mosque, a place of worship for Muslims. This makes some Jewish Israelis angry. It is in Jerusalem, the capital city of Israel. It sits on the site of the temple of the Jews, which was destroyed long ago.

Many Muslims feel that this should be their part of the land. This is a map of Israeli settlements in an area called “the West Bank”. Many Muslims feel that this should be their part of the land. They feel that the Jewish Israelis are moving in to take over. This makes some Muslims of the area angry.
