Rainbow’s Ending Introductory tasks Instant freeze frames to show: 1.Giant 2.Rainbow (the character) 3.A Leader Discussion: What is Rainbow’s Ending about? Or more than one message? 6.What about title? Is it appropriate? Why? 7.What about how the play ends?

Rainbow’s Ending Task 1: what to do with the narration ? WHY are NARRATION tasks important for this play? Avoid having the narrator separate from the action; instead place the narrator within the stage picture Narrator can animate a freeze frame Narrator can be invisible to characters (possibility of playing tricks on the characters) Narrator can become a character Can act and narrate simultaneously Narration can be shared across the group (builds sense of ensemble) Characters can come “out of role” to become narrators e.g. using direct address changing focus and making eye contact with audience any emotion the character may have been showing suddenly vanishes different vocal and physical qualities for character/narrator)

Scene 6: Essence Machine (dystopia) An essence machine is where you each think of a movement or gesture based on a theme. You make this movement or gesture repeatedly, so it looks like it is part of a machine. Make a city machine using the short lines at the start of Scene 6. Music can help when creating an essence machine. Why? Was the music you were given appropriate? Why would this practical task help you understand Scene 6 particularly? Pace? Characters? The play as a whole? Does staging the opening of scene 6 this way make a statement or message about the human cities in the play?

Scene 10: Creating darker, more naturalistic moods What can help the actors achieve this? Characterisation? – Ensemble? – Committed acting (not laughing, focus) – Use of techniques such as slow motion to emphasise or highlight important events in the audience’s mind Why is it important to do this successfully? naturalistic (trying to look like real life) non-naturalistic (deliberately not trying to look like real life to make a statement)
