Question 1- plot summary 11/25/11 1. Ralph is injured from the night before. 2. Piggy kneels before Ralph and they realise Simon is dead. 3. Sam and Eric arrive and they feel guilty about the dance. 4. Roger talks about how Wilfred is tied up. 5. Jack and his tribe plan the attack on Ralph and Piggy to steal the glasses. 6. Ralph and his group start to make the fire. 7. They get tired and forget the use of the fire. Ralph stresses the importance of the fire. 8. Ralph thinks of home as he tries to get to sleep. 9. The group hears strange noises outside. 10. Jack and his tribe break into the shelter and fight with Ralph’s group.   11. The tribe steals Piggy’s glasses. 12. Jack walks down the beach with a new heir of power and authority with Piggy’s glasses in hand.

Question 2- characters 11/25/11 Piggy is a very optimistic character. He holds onto what bit of rationality he has left and remains hopeful. “Piggy nodded eagerly. "That's right. We was on the outside. We never done nothing, we never seen nothing." Piggy paused, then went on. "We'll live on our own, the four of us--" "Four of us. We aren't enough to keep the fire burning." "We'll try. See? I lit it.” Page 174 This quote shows Piggy’s unwavering optimism. It is important to stay optimistic in negative situations. It helps keep one’s priorities straight and helps one think more clearly and logically. In this example it helps Ralph keep his mane goal of survival at the front of his mind. Piggy is easily made fun of and is easy to tease. "My asthma--" The response was mechanical. "Sucks to your ass-mar." "If I pull logs about, I get my asthma bad. I wish I didn't, Ralph, but there it is.” Page 179 He easily made fun of because of the fact he has Asthma and because of his round figure. He is also the only boy on the island who has glasses. Generally young children tend to make fun of people who are different. For example children might call another wearing glasses a nerd. Or a child could be left out of a game because they can’t run fast enough. This exclusion typically is more common in young children.

Question 2- characters 11/25/11 Jack is a very cruel character who doesn’t care about others. "He's going to beat Wilfred." "What for?" Robert shook his head doubtfully. "I don't know. He didn't say. He got angry and made us tie Wilfred up. He's been"--he giggled Excitedly--"he's been tied for hours, waiting” "But didn't the Chief say why?" "I never heard him." Page 176 Tying someone up is a cruel enough action but tying someone just for the sake of it is beyond cruel. Anyone who commits such an act has no empathy and does not care about anyone other than themselves Jack has a lot of power and is very controlling. “The tribe considered this; and then were shaken, as if by a flaw of wind. The Chief saw the effect of his words and stood abruptly. "But tomorrow we'll hunt and when we've got meat we'll have a feast--“ Jack knows what is most important to the tribe and uses it to control them. He knows that the boys a re hungry and uses hunting for meat as a controlling mechanism. This is a common tactic used in dictatorships. For example the Libyan government was forced to fight for their president because if they didn’t their families could be killed.

Question 3- symbols 11/25/11 “Easily, exulting in his achievement. He was a chief now in truth; and he made stabbing motions with his spear. From his left hand dangled Piggy's broken glasses.” This quotation shows the symbolism of Jack’s savagery and the stealing of technology. The glasses represent technology. When Jack and his tribe take the glasses from Piggy they are taking fire and power. Golding is trying to explain that if technology is taken into the wrong hands it can be detrimental to a society. An example of this is a protest in general such as the Libyan or Egyptian protests. The government tried to control technology such as the internet where people can collaborate and have the right to free speech. Technology played a great part in these protests. On the island the fire was a key part of life for multiple reasons. It provided a signal for rescue and a way to cook food. It was taken into the wrong hands and weakened Ralph’s side of the island greatly. “He pointed at this savage and that with his spear”. This quotation shows that ruling with an iron fist can be a way of controlling a group affectively. By pointing his spear Jack is subconsciously instilling fear on the group he wants to control. An example of this in real life is when a horse sees a rider holding a whip. The horse feels fear by seeing the whip and knows to walk faster or obey its rider. “The Chief paused. They saw a triangle of startling pink dart out, pass along his lips and vanish Again.” This quote shows that leaders can even be uncertain at times. It also shows that a mask can hide fear and uncertainty very easily. Most leaders ware formal clothing and speak with a very certain and formal heir. They do this because they want people to feel certain of what they are saying and they want to be trusted. When an authoritative figure speaks in front of a group of people one is more likely to notice any flaws or pauses they might make that would suggest uncertainty. “He looked from face to face. Then, at the moment of greatest passion and conviction, that curtain flapped in his head and he forget what he had been driving at. He knelt there, his fist clenched, Gazing solemnly from one to the other. Then the curtain whisked back.” This quotation shows that people are very easily influenced by one another. Ralph briefly forgets what is most important to remember for his survival. He descends into savagery for a very small amount of time. It’s easy to fall into this trap when everyone else has done so. A small-scale example of this is when a new device such as an iPhone is launched. Everyone buys the IPhone and one feels that they must buy it to until they realise that their current phone still works and that they will spend more money on this new phone.

Guilt- Sam showed his guilt when in the middle of denying his involvement in the murder of Simon, he touched “a scratch on his forehead and then hurriedly took his hand away” (quotation found on pg 175). Eric also shows guilt when he “fingered his split lip” (also found on pg 175). They joined Piggy in denial when they said they left the dance early. Crumbling Civilisation- As fear and quest for power take over, the boys split into apposing groups instead of working together towards the common goal of getting rescued. They resorted to violence to acquire symbols of power. “Then there was vicious snarling in the mouth of the shelter and the plunge and thump of living things” (quotation found on pg 184). All this was so the new chef could proclaim his authority. “He made stabbing motions with his spear. From his left hand dangled Piggy’s broken glasses” Question 4- themes 11/25/11 DENIAL- Piggy made excuses about Simons death instead of owning up to killing him. “We was scared!” said Piggy excitedly. “Anything might have happened. It wasn’t – what you said” (quotation found on pg 173). Maturity- Ralph tried to take responsibility by not covering up the death of Simon. “Don’t you understand Piggy? The things we did—” “You were outside, outside the circle. You never really came in. Didn’t you see what we– what they did?” (both quotations found on pg 173).
