Human Biology and Health Consider this: Brick is to wall. Wall is to house. House is to neighborhood. Do you have that straight? What does that have to do with the human body?

Chapter 1: The Organized Body The body has levels of organization. Starting with the smallest unit it goes as follows:  Cells  Tissues  Organs  Organ systems Look at page 17 in your book for the levels involved with the skeletal system!

The Levels  Cells: The basic unit of structure and function of living things. The human body contains about 100,000,000,000,000 cells! (100 trillion)  Tissues: A group of similar cells that perform the same function. Ex. Muscle, Nerve, Connective (Bone, fat and blood) and Epithelial Tissue. (Covers body surfaces, skin and digestive tract covering.) See page 19 for descriptions.  Organs: Structures composed of different kinds of tissues all working to perform a job. Like the heart contains 4 types of tissue; muscle, nerve, connective and epithelial.

 Organ System: A group of organs that work together to perform a major function. Ex: circulatory system, digestive system, etc. See page 21 for more with descriptions. All organ systems depend on each other and are interconnected!

Sect. 2 Keeping the Body in Balance Homeostasis: The process by which the body’s internal environment is kept stable in spite of changes in the external environment. Ex: Maintaining your internal body temperature, maintaining energy/water levels. Stress upsets homeostasis.  Stress is the reaction of your body and mind to threatening, challenging, or disturbing events

Physical Response to Stress Alarm Stage: The body releases adrenaline. This prepares you for the next stage by giving a burst of energy for faster breathing, heartbeat and muscle use. Fight or Flight: Dealing with the stressor. Fight it or take flight from it. Short term upset homeostasis. Long Term Stress: Can cause you to be tired, irritable and mean.

Dealing with Stress 1) Deal with it! Don’t pretend it doesn’t exist. 2) Talk it out with a trusted person. 3) Ask for help. Doctors, counselors, etc. 4) Use physical activity as a stress reducer.

Sect. 3: Wellness Wellness: Being at your best possible level of health. Three parts:  Physical Health: How your body functions. Exercise and eat healthy foods. Both on schedule!  Mental Health: Your feelings and emotions. Think positive and make healthy, achievable goals.  Social Health: How well you get along with others. Love, respect and give and accept help. Be a friend. COMMUNICATE BY TALKING AND LISTENING! Stop negative peer pressure!
