Journal Entry 1 Season: Winter 4:01 am January 1 st, 1500 Sorry, I forgot you couldn’t read hieroglyphs. Sorry, I forgot you couldn’t read hieroglyphs. I’ll translate it.

Journal Entry 1 Season: Winter 4:00 am January 1 st, 1500 Hello. My name is Oya. I am part of the Ute tribe……………….. I woke up early and I didn’t get my sleep.

Journal Entry 1 Season: Winter 3:00 pm January 1 st, 1500 Today my Native American friends and I are going to build our house. My family's house is a tepee. Our tribe name means Land Of The Sun. Us men hunted and defended for our families. My fellow friends and I hunt together to get the most out of our time. We hunt antelope, deer, buffalo, and rabbits. We lived close to a river in the bottom of a canyon. We took advantage of the fish. But we don’t chase a turkey for 20 miles.

Journal Entry 1 Season: Winter 7:00 pm January 1 st, 1500 We had doll toys, but I don’t play with them. Women cook, took care of children, and made clothing. Both men and women took part in storytelling, art, music, and traditional medicine. We lived in wickiups, they are similar to tepees. They were easily put together and easy to take apart. We were told of a man eating monster– that used to give us nightmares.

Journal Entry 2 Season: Winter 5:30 am January 2 nd, 1500 The terrain in our area is very rocky with cliffs and canyons. We live in a desert. We live in different ranges, in the land. Where our tribe Lives

Journal Entry 2 Season: Winter 7:00 am January 2 nd, 1500 In the area that we live in, we rarely have rain. We live in a desert. But we live near a river in the bottom of a canyon. We also sometimes find animals. In some of the other Ute nations, they have a lot of grass and trees. The river is our only water source. Wait– I just saw something. I stay very still. It is a deer. We rarely see deer in this area. Tonight we will have a feast!

Journal Entry 2 Season: Winter 5:45 pm January 2 nd, 1500 Dinner is almost ready. My family was really happy that I killed a deer. I forgot to tell you how old I am. I am 12 years old. “Nice kill son!” my dad said when I came back with the deer. It was a large one. I also managed to catch a turkey, without chasing it 20 miles.

Journal Entry 2 Season: Winter 5:45 pm January 2 nd, 1500 Dinner is almost ready. They were really happy that I killed a deer. I forgot to tell you how old I am. I am 12 years old. “Nice kill son!” my dad said when I came back with the deer. It was a large one. I also managed to catch a turkey, without chasing it 20 miles.

Journal Entry 2 Season: Winter 6:10 pm January 2 nd, 1500 In the area that we live in, the winters are punishing if you go outside. It is freezing. I remember the time when I went outside when I was 6. I almost froze to death. Lucky for me, someone spotted me. I was taken back home. I get into a lot of trouble. I almost climbed a mountain. There are many mountains and cactuses. Wait.. “Dinner’s ready!” my mom called. Great! I can’t wait! YUMMY!

Journal Entry 2 Season: Winter 7:00 pm January 2 nd, 1500 The terrain is rocky and desert. We have a few trees. I go rock climbing sometimes. It is very fun. It is one of my favorite activities. The challenges to overcome are the hot weather and lack of an easy access to water. One of the best things in the world, water.

Journal Entry 2 Season: Winter 6:30 pm January 2 nd, 1500 The common plants and animals in our region are cactus and grass. Grass is at the bottom of the cliff, next to the river. The cactus plants are also a supply of water. The only problem that we have is deciding WHO is going to get the cactus home. PRICKLY!

Journal Entry 3 Season: Winter 7:00 pm January 2 nd, 1500 The weather in our region is very hot and cold. During the day it is searing hot. The sun is up early and it feels like it lights the ground on fire. Like I said before, we rarely get rain. In the winter, its not much better. The ground and air is still punishing. It’s just a few degrees cooler.

Journal Entry 3 Season: Winter 8:00 pm January 3 rd, 1500 The weather in our region has not affected our way of living. The challenges to overcome are finding easier and safer ways down the canyon. The rain is the only problem. We get none. But we can get water from the river.

Reflection 1 Season: Winter 7:00 am January 3 rd, 1500 Our future looks good if you ask me. We are doing great! We have survived for hundreds of years. Nothing can stop our existence…… Hey wait– I haven’t seen those people before… I wonder if they are gods….. I think life looks good. The Gods have come to aid us! They have shiny things…..the only threats to our survival is the scarcity of meat. Now we have no protein. “God” Protein source
