Introduction Fall Fall is one of the four seasons. You have learned that in the fall the weather gets cold and leaves change color, but have you thought about the animals? Animals everywhere have to prepare for a long cold winter. Take a minute to think of an animal you see in your backyard. What do you think that animal has to do to get ready for winter? In this lesson you will see what a goose or a squirrel does in the fall to get ready for winter. GO

Process You will see fall through the eyes of either a goose or a squirrel. On each page click the picture of the speaker to hear me read as you read along with me. When you are done reading click the word GO at the bottom right to move to the next page. If you want to go back one page click the word BACK at the bottom left. BackBack GoGo

Task Your job is to read and listen to information being told to you. At the end you will take a worksheet from the folder back to your table and answer the questions. All the information you need to complete the worksheet is found in this lesson. BackBack GoGo

Evaluation Once you are done with the lesson, take a worksheet from the folder next to the computer. If you chose to look at fall through the eyes of a squirrel, take a worksheet with the squirrel on it. If you saw fall through the eyes of a goose, take a worksheet with a goose on it. BackBack GoGo

Your task is to learn what tree squirrels do in the fall to get ready for winter. In the next few pages you will look at life through the eyes of a tree squirrel. You will read along with me as I tell you 5 facts about tree squirrels. You will then complete a worksheet testing your new found knowledge when you are done. Click GO BACKBACK GOGO

1) Have you ever wondered where a squirrel lives? Like any other animal, squirrels need a home. Squirrels that build their homes in a hole in the ground are called ground squirrels. The squirrels you see in your backyard live in trees. Squirrels that live in trees are called tree squirrels. As a tree squirrel you have no problems climbing a tall tree and building a nest somewhere at the top. 2) Whether you are a ground squirrel or a tree squirrel, you do not hibernate in winter. You are wide awake and always looking for food. BACKBACK GOGO

3) Even though you are awake all winter long, you are less active than you would be in the summer. You like to stay at home in your tree, close to your family to keep warm. 4) Since plants and trees lose their leaves over winter, food is harder to find. During winter you will come down from your tree house every once in a while to look for food. You will collect as much food from the ground as you can and take it back to your tree house. BACKBACK GOGO

5) Because there is less food to eat in winter, you like to save as much food as you can. Once you have collected food from the ground and brought it back to your tree house, you put the food in a big pile close to your home. Your pile of food is within easy reach of you and your family. So whenever you are hungry you can easily get something to nibble on. BACKBACK GOGO

Congratulations you are finished You have learned where squirrels live and what they do to get ready for winter. Please take a squirrel worksheet from the folder and finish it at your seat. Thank you. BACKBACK GOGO

Your task is to learn what geese do in the fall to get ready for winter. In the next few pages you will look at life through the eyes of a Canadian Goose. You will read along with me as I tell you 5 facts about Canadian Geese. You will then complete a worksheet testing your new found knowledge when you are done. Click GO BACKBACK GOGO

1) Like all animals, Canadian Geese need a home to live in. As a goose you like to be close to water. You make your nest near ponds and rivers. Your nest is made out of straw, grass, and small feathers. 2) As a Canadian Goose, you like to be around water. You get most of your food from the plants and grasses that live in water. When you get tired of eating plants from the water, you will walk along the ground eating small bits of corn and wheat left behind on a farmers field. BACK BACK GOGO

3) As a goose you know winter is coming. You know you will be flying south so you can be somewhere warm. During fall you are going to eat as much as you can to get as big and fat as you can. The more food you eat in the fall means the more energy you will have to fly south for the winter. 4) Since you do not hibernate over winter, you are wide awake and looking for food. But in the fall the weather turns cold and trees and grasses slow down their growth and rest. You know that once the snow starts to fall food is going to be really hard to find. BACKBACK GOGO

5) Since their is less food in the winter and you know winter is coming, you want to go somewhere warm. You and your family and friends like to fly south, where it’s warmer. So before the first snowflake hits the ground, you and your family fly south for the winter. BACK BACK GOGO

Congratulations you are finished You have learned where geese live, what they eat, and why they fly south for the winter. Please take a Canadian Geese worksheet from the folder and finish it at your seat. Thank you. BACKBACK GOGO
