My name is Yakama. I am part of the Creek Tribe. My family and I live in the southeast region. This is my story …

January 3 rd 1700 I woke up and found out that my family and I are moving out of my uncle’s wattle and daub house into our new house. I watched my father build our new house. He told me that first you make a frame of river cane, wood, and vines. Next he said he would have to make a coating out of plaster and make the roof out of grass.

January,30,1700 I didn't like this day. We had to move further south because white men forced us to move off our land. I didn’t want to move, but mother always say new experiences are good. Where we moved was hot and wet. So father built a house 3ft above the ground, with a slanted roof and no walls.

February 7, 1700 Today I helped my mother make new clothing for us all. She made my Father a breechcloth and leather leggings. My Mother made her self a wrap around skirt mantels made out of deer skin. She made leggings for me.

March 14, 1700 This afternoon my mother asked if I could help her on the farm. We grew corn and squash, and sometimes even beans. While I was helping my mother I wondered where my father was? My mother told me he must had gone hunting for dinner. When he had gone hunting before we brought back deer, turkey, and fish. I wish I could hunt with him.

April 13, 1700 My friends from another farm came to play with me. We first played with are dolls. Then my mother wanted us to go out. So we went to see a woman make a necklace out of beads. We use to make baskets and pottery, but now we don’t have the materials. Our tribe is famous for this. In the night we saw are fathers paint there faces for a dance. They also shaved there head into a Mohawk style.

May 10, 1700 My mother and I went for a walk. On our walk we saw the swamp. We also saw a river in the valley which we swam in. To dry off we climbed up a mountain. From the mountain I could see the beaches. When I went home I asked my mother where In North America are we? She replied in the southeast near Florida, Alabama, and Georgia.

June 14, 1700 My mother and I had nothing to do so we took a walk in the forest. During our walk we saw wild deer and turkey. There were huge Cypress and Palmetto trees in the forest. We saw alligators and some snakes in the swamp. We saw giant fern and grasses that could hurt me because they were sharp. I had fun on my day off.

June 27, 1700 It’s really hot here. Sometimes we swim in a river to cool are selves down. It’s also wet and humid. We are getting used to it though. It used to be like this back in Alabama but not as hot. Hopefully it won’t always be like this. Maybe we will get used to it.

July 30, 1700 It’s so hot and dry. It’s so hot that we have to build our houses so it will bring the cool air in. Because we live in a swampy region we have to take a canoe everywhere. We might get used to it after a few years.

August 15, 1700 Our village is destroyed by this huge swirling sea. There were two of them. I think those white men call them hurricanes. We had to go to another near by place. Then after few days we went back. All our crops and houses were destroyed by the hurricanes. We had to build everything all over again. Our whole tribe helped out. We might have our whole village built in the next few weeks. I hope we don’t have another one soon.

August 30, 1700 It’s really hot here. We have to make our houses with no walls so that cool air can come in. Because we live in an area that’s swampy we have to take a canoe everywhere. Sometimes to keep cool men didn’t wear cloth shirts. I got to go my mother is calling me to eat some dear and corn for dinner.

I am now married and have children of my own. We live in a town and my children go to a school were they learn English. My life as a child was hard but fun. I wish my kids got the chance to live with my tribe in the wild. We still celebrate different holidays and also do different traditions with family.

I think I got a B because I feel like I didn't put enough detail in the last few slides. I liked the project because I'm interested in native Americans and how they live. I had a hard time with the project because I didn’t have enough time. Something I would do differently is that I would use different time period that has more and interesting information.
