Minimum & Maximum The maximum is the largest number in the set of data. The minimum is the smallest number in the set of data.

Finding The minimum & Maximum Place all of the numbers given in numerical order. That means put them in order from least to greatest. Locate the largest and smallest number.

Finding The range Find the maximum and minimum using the rules above Subtract the minimum from the maximum. EXAMPLE: You received test scores of 95, 73, 90, 93 & 80. What is the range of scores that you received?

mean The mean is also known as the average. The mean is the most commonly used statistical landmark.

How to find the mean Add all of the numbers given in the set of data. Count the number of numbers in the set of data. Divide the sum found in step #1 by the numbers of numbers found in step #2. Make sure to include any labels that are necessary.

EXAMPLE : You received test scores of 95%, 93%, 92%, and 80%. What is your mean test score? Just remember that your parents will be MEAN if you have a bad average !!!

Median If we are looking for the median we are looking for the middle number. How to find the median… Place all of the numbers given in numerical order. Next, cross off the maximum (largest number), then the minimum (smallest number). Continue to cross off the largest number and the smallest number in pairs until you have 1 or 2 numbers left. If you have one number left, that is your median. If you have 2 numbers left, proceed to the step #5. If you have 2 numbers left, find the mean of those 2 numbers, that is your median.

EXAMPLE #1: You received test scores of 92, 80, 95, 90, & 93. What is your median test score? EXAMPLE #2: You received test scores of 95, 80, 83, & 93. What is your median test score?

I remember the median by thinking the median is in the middle of the road.

Mode If we are looking for the mode we are looking for the number that appears most often How to find the mode… Place all of the numbers given in numerical order. Identify the number that appears more often than all of the other numbers. You can have 1 mode, 2 modes, many modes, or no mode. If there is no mode, your answer is none or no mode.

EXAMPLE #1: You received test scores of 95, 80, 90, 93 & 80. What is the mode of this set of numbers? EXAMPLE #2: You received test scores of 95, 83, 80, 90, 91, 93, 83, & 80. What is the mode of this set of numbers? EXAMPLE #3: You received test scores of 52, 75, 83, & 53. What is the mode of this set of numbers?

Line Plots

How To Make A Line Plot Draw a straight line using a ruler or straightedge. Create a scale on the line you just drew. –A–A scale is a set of numbers that is evenly spaced. Place an “X” over the line for each number in your set of data. Underneath your scale provide a label that tells the reader what the numbers represent. Remember to give your line plot a title.

Let’s Make a Line Plot The students in Mr. Frommann’s Brown Class received the test scores listed below. Make a line plot to represent this data. 90, 95, 98, 85, 89, 99, 82, 95, 98
