Singapore Math 8 Step Model Drawing

Why? A study compared math achievement in over 40 countries in grades 4, 8 and 12. Singapore and a handful of East Asian countries performed extremely well, much better than the United States. They teach children a PROCESS to solve problems and how to APPLY that process to new problems.

Addition Keep the same unit (apples and apples or fruit and fruit) Finding a bigger number Subtraction Keep the same unit (apples and apples or fruit and fruit) Finding a smaller number Multiplication Different units (apples and baskets or fruit and crates) Finding a bigger number Division Different units (apples and baskets or fruit and crates) Finding a smaller number Johnny had 6 apples. Susie gave him 10 more apples. How many apples did he have then? Johnny had 16 apples. He gave Susie 10 of his apples. How many apples did he have then? Johnny put apples into baskets. Each basket had 6 apples. There were 10 baskets. How many apples did he have altogether? Johnny had 60 apples. He put 10 apples in each basket. How many baskets did he use?
