Church Leadership Lesson 2

Introduction

What is “Leadership?” In a way, leadership is something that you recognize when you see it. However, it is beneficial to review what others have stated in an attempt to vocalize their definition of leadership –Two definitions of leadership The art of motivating a group of people to achieve a common goal with a sense of action and purpose Inspiring and empowering constituents to maximize their abilities and accomplishments through examples, teaching, compassion, direction and vision Influence to effect direction of another in a positive way

Two Other Published Definitions of Leadership Haiman said leadership is “that process whereby an individual directs, guides, influences, or controls the thoughts, feelings or behaviors of other human beings.” Alan Keith stated, “Leadership is ultimately about creating a way for people to contribute to making something extraordinary happen.”

The Concept of Leadership is Broad, Diverse and Includes Aspects of Most Everyone’s Life Virtually everyone would be involved in some area of leadership It is difficult to envision someone leading a life that would be totally void of any leadership responsibilities This would include parenting, supervision at work, taking charge of school, neighborhood or civic activities and of course Church activities

Brother Norman Hogan’s Definition of Leadership The “ability to direct others to the efficient completion of a prescribed goal with a minimum of friction.” –Ability –Ability to direct others –A prescribed goal –The efficient completion –Minimum of friction
