Introduction: We seldom listen as well as we might We seldom listen attentively to the sounds surround us Aaron Copland: “Are you hearing everything that is going on?” “Are you really sensitive to it?”

The general concept of listening: Do you understand what you are listening? The most important thing is to KNOW HOW to listen.

The facet model Understanding the arts: 1.Who created it? 2.When and where was it created? 3.Why and for whom was it created? 4.What does it sound or look like?

Understanding the Work: 5. What kind of structure or form does it have? 6. What is its subject? 7. What is being expressed? 8. What techniques did its creator use to help us understand what is being expressed?

Application of the facet model Examples of various listening exercises will be discussed.
