Technology at Telnet College The Wave of the Future Presented by the Task Force on Campus Technology

Mission Statement Telnet College is committed to celebrating the diversity of our students, staff, and faculty. We pledge to serve all of our students by providing an academically challenging and compelling co-curricular learning experience. Our goal is to educate students to become engaged citizens and to embrace life-long inquiry.

Current Status  Tuition & Fees - $19,000; Room & Board - $6,000  Residence hall amenities include cable television and modem pool internet access; no College-provided internet access off-campus  Several computer labs available on campus; one central, 24 hour lab (Keyboard Hall)  No on-line services currently available; college web-page does exist  Judicial process, providing due process to accused students, is in place with the Dean of Students serving as the judicial officer

Issue: Accessibility, the Digital Divide, & Techno-Savvy Parents Recommended Courses of Action:  Providing computer use workshops during orientation  Creating more labs (particularly in residence halls) and extending lab hours  Phone Help Line staffed by central computer lab staff  Provide modem pool for off-campus students  Making all services available on both web and paper  Creating an “Especially for Parents” information section on the College web site

Issue: Technology Planning Recommended Courses of Action:  Assessment of students and faculty as well as a cost/benefit analysis (see handout)  Research peer institutions  Investigate cable modems in residence halls  Consider prohibiting music file sharing web page access; institute a bandwidth usage or technology fee (service satisfaction, connection, bandwidth)

Issue: Harassment, Plagiarism, Privacy Recommended Courses of Action:  Policy Creation*  Code of Conduct  Acceptable Use of College Computing Facilities  Acceptable Use of Resident Computer Network  Programming  Supported by student development theory:  Sanford (challenge and support)  Maslow (safety needed to learn)  Tinto (safe, supportive environment needed to retain students)  In person & in chat rooms  Orientation *Sample policies can be found at:

Issue: Building Community Recommended Courses of Action:  Reinventing Programming: The need to meet students where they are at  Redefine programming models to include web-based ways of interacting, for example:  Instant messenger, chat rooms, networked games and programs in addition to traditional face-to-face interaction

Issue: Offering Web Services Recommended Courses of Action:  Investigate the creation of Web Services Portal via collaboration with Computer Science Faculty & Students  supported by student development theory:  Astin (involving students in a meaningful project)  Kolb (allowing students to learn first-hand)  Providing links:  health/counseling, financial aid, student activities, tutoring, writing center, academic advising, housing (assignments & contracts), international education, career services, multicultural student services  Admissions & Registration could be completed online, electronic payment option available  Feasibility Study of Distance Education

Issue: Internet-based Addictions Recommended Courses of Action:  Provide training to staff to recognize warning signs of addictive behaviors  Distinguishing between internet use addiction vs. content addiction (ex. gambling, shopping)  Advertise counseling workshops & use reduction tips on-line
