Great interregional potential Water has powered Telemark for centuries. Our abundance of hydroelectric power fuels economic growth and supports a thriving cultural scene. The industrial era started in 1902 when Norsk Hydro developed artificial fertilizer, a business continued today by Yara, the global market leader. Home to the largest port in southern Norway, Telemark is an outward-looking region with customers and business partners in Europe and worldwide. Telemark’s world-class clusters of onshore and offshore industry, ICT and cleantech, and the cultural sector have joined forces with Telemark University College, research institutions and government to pursue opportunities for interregional cooperation between Telemark and Europe. With unrivalled expertise in maritime industry, in renewable energy and cleantech, plus a flourishing cultural sector, Telemark is the perfect place to create jobs producing the energy-efficient, sustainable goods and services that tomorrow’s society will need. Terje Riis Johansen, County Mayor of Telemark

Green technology Our manufacturing sector is among the greenest in the world. Highly regarded research institutions and industry are working as partners in the emerging carbon capture field. The region leads the way in offering pilot facilities and technology parks for developing green solutions and products. Scandinavia’s foremost cleantech organization, Green Business Noway, is based here in Telemark. Carbon capture Ongoing national and international pilot testing of four CO2 capture technologies at Norcem in Brevik in cooperation with the local research institute Tel-Tek who has long and broad expertise in CO2-handling. The private research institure Norner is developing technology to make plastics from CO2.

Renewable energy solutions Telemark has been using renewable hydro power to produce goods for centuries. The region’s manufacturing sector is a world leader in energy efficiency with unrivalled expertise in this field. Telemark is one of the top five counties in Norway for hydroelectric power generation. The region also offers great potential for other renewables. The extensive forested areas could be a source of biofuels. Telemark University College is a centre of expertise in biogas research.
