Valley of the Dolls Finding employment in Hit the Sky, a Broadway musical, Anna Welles moves to New York City form Lawrenceville, Massachusetts. Here she meets Neely O’ Hara, (Ethel Agnes O’Neill). She is a vaudeville star who lives in the same building as her. She recommends her for a role in the show’s chorus. She also meets a showgirl named Jennifer North who is regarded for her beauty and not her talent is in the play as well. They soon become best friends. Through the next twenty years all of the women start careers which bring them to fame and eventually self-destruction. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Jacqueline Susann was a lazy but clever student. She scored a 140 her IQ test, the highest in her class. This made her mother believe that Susann would some day become a wonderful writer. Susann however wanted to become and actress. Shown in her books she had a hard-to- please mother as well as a roguish father. By the time she had entered high school she was a wild child using drugs and partying.
