2. WHO IS JULIE TAYMOR?  Julie Taymor was born in Newton, Massachusetts in December of 1952. Julie took an interest to theatre and preforming arts at an early age. At age ten, she joined Boston Children’s Theater Company. By 16, she traveled to Paris to study at the mime school of Jacques LeCoq. By the time she entered Oberlin College, she knew she was headed for a career in theater.

3. WHAT DID SHE WRITE?  Julie Taymor has directed just about every style of theater. Julie is not only a director, but an author. She has published five books. She has directed six motion pictures one of them the highly acclaimed movie, “Frida” (2002) starring Salma Hayek. Julie has been responsible for many stage plays, although her most famous work is The Lion King Musical.

4.  Frida is a 2002 biopic which depicts the life of the life of surrealist Mexican painter Frida Kahlo. Frida Kahlo is portrayed by actress Salma Hayek. The movie is directed by Julie Taymor. It won Oscars for Best Makeup and Best Original Music Score.

5. The Lion King Musical is based on the 1994 Disney film by the same name. The musical debuted July 8, 1997 in Minneapolis, Minnesota at the Orpheum Theater. On October 15, 1997 the Lion King Musical premiered on Broadway in New York City. The musical won numerous awards, one including the Tony Award for Best Musical of 1998. Which made her the first woman to win the Tony Award for directing a musical. The Lion King Musical is still a very relevant production who still travels across the globe today.

6.  Julie Taymor is important to theater because of her style of directing. Julie choose to show puppetry in The Lion King because that is her focus and she didn’t want to hide the faces of the actors.

7.  The Lion King Musical is famous for it’s costume design which depicts beautiful African wildlife. The costumes involve the actors humanity. Julie Taymor wanted to show a costume design that showed the art of animals with human like characteristics. The brilliant design concept won her the 1998 Tony Award for Original Costume Design.

8. SPIDER-MAN: TURN OFF THE DARK  Spider-Man: Turn Off the dark is a 2011 Rock Musical directed by Julie Taymor. Julie left in March 2011, following artistic differences with the producers. Spider- Man premiered on June 14, 2011. Which received mix views and was unfortunately not as popular as the Hit Broadway Musical, The Lion King.

9.  Julie continues to change the world of theater with her breath- taking direction in musicals. Although, she hasn’t had any new works. She has given the society musicals and movies that will last a lifetime.
