Maths Parents Workshop - Calculations By the end of Reception (Early Learning Goals) Children should be able to: count reliably with numbers from one to 20 and place them in order say which number is one more or one less than a given number. using quantities and objects, add and subtract two single-digit numbers and count on or back to find the answer. solve problems, including doubling, halving and sharing Whitehall Infant School February 2013

Maths through play and practical experiences Before we can embark on any kind of formal calculating there are vital practical processes the children need to experience: Role play- shops, cafes Outdoor play- sand, water, games Rhymes and songs Stories Games

Calculating Say numbers in order Recognise numerals Develop problem solving skills Identify more and less Begin to relate addition to combining two groups of objects and subtraction to ‘taking away’

Resources we use at school

Numicon We use Numicon throughout the school. Its colours and patterns gives children a real sense of number. In Nursery and Reception, Numicon is used in play activities so that the children become familiar with each shape and number. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Numicon-First-Steps-Home-Kit/dp/019848688X/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1425973444&sr=8-2&keywords=numicon

How can I support my child at home? Make counting a part of your day Play games which use a dice Have a set of number cards at home Make patterns Count the stairs as you go up them. How many socks come out of the washing machine? How many plates do we need for dinner? How many people at the bus stop? Put them in order (forwards/backwards) Flashcards What card comes next? Matching Pairs Pick a card and count out that many objects (pasta, lego)
