Introduction – Lesson 2 Theological Foundations of World Evangelization The Purpose of God – LC 1 The Authority and Power of the Bible – LC 2 The Uniqueness and Universality of Christ – LC 3 The Power of the Holy Spirit – LC 14 The Return of Christ – LC 15

The Person of God The Covenant opens with a paragraph about God “We affirm our belief in the one eternal God, Creator and Lord of the world, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, who governs all things according to the purpose of his will.” LC 1 “…The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth...” Isaiah 40:28

The Person of God God is both eternal and active in time God is both one and three “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” Matthew 28:19 God rules both nature and history God “…works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will.” Ephesians 1:11

The Purpose of God God’s redeeming purpose began with Abraham, and continued with Israel. It finds completion in including Gentile believers. “He has been calling out from the world a people for himself, and sending his people back into the world to be his servants and his witnesses, for the extension of his kingdom, the building up of Christ's body, and the glory of his name.” LC 1 “…God at first showed his concern by taking from the Gentiles a people for himself.” Acts 15:14

The Purpose of God The Mission of the Church: ▫ To extend the Kingdom of God ▫ To build up the Body of Christ ▫ To glorify God’s name

The Power of God We are frail, weak and fragile – but we carry a precious treasure - the gospel and through our weakness the power of God is shown most clearly. “Yet we rejoice that, even when borne by earthen vessels, the gospel is still a precious treasure. To the task of making that treasure known in the power of the Holy Spirit we desire to dedicate ourselves anew.” LC 1 “But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us.” 2 Corinthians 4:7

The Authority of the Bible “We affirm the divine inspiration, truthfulness and authority of both Old and New Testament Scriptures in their entirety as the only written word of God, without error in all that it affirms, and the only infallible rule of faith and practice.” LC 2 Scripture is ‘the Word of God’…and it is his ‘only’ written Word, for we cannot accept the scriptures of other religions. “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.” 2 Timothy 3:16

The Authority of the Bible Inspiration “ For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.” 2 Peter 1:21 Truthfulness “…your word is truth.” John 17:17 Authority Note the order of the three words. The divine inspiration of Scripture secures its truthfulness, and because Scripture is truth from God it has authority.

The Power of the Bible “We also affirm the power of God's word to accomplish his purpose of salvation." LC 2 “...so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.” Isaiah 55:11

The Interpretation of the Bible “The message of the Bible is addressed to all men and women. For God's revelation in Christ and in Scripture is unchangeable. Through it the Holy Spirit still speaks today. He illumines the minds of God's people in every culture to perceive its truth freshly through their own eyes and thus discloses to the whole Church ever more of the many-colored wisdom of God.” LC 2 “His intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms.” Ephesians 3:10

The Uniqueness of Christ “We affirm that there is only one Savior and only one gospel... Jesus Christ, being himself the only God-Man, who gave himself as the only ransom for sinners, is the only mediator between God and people. There is no other name by which we must be saved. We firmly deny every kind of syncretism. It is not worthy of Christ and the gospel. Christ and his gospel are unique, and non-Christian religions know nothing of them.” LC 3

The Uniqueness of Christ We know that some will reject Christ Those who are saved must ascribe all the credit to God, while those who are lost must accept all the blame themselves.

The Universality of Christ “To proclaim Jesus as ‘the Savior of the world’ is not to affirm that all people are either automatically or ultimately saved… it is to proclaim God's love for a world of sinners and to invite everyone to respond to him as Savior and Lord…” LC 3

The Universality of Christ We move from the uniqueness of Christ to the universality of Christ. These truths cannot be separated. It is because Jesus Christ is the only Savior that we must bring his gospel to the whole world. “…We no longer believe just because of what you said; now we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man really is the Savior of the world.” John 4:42

The Universality of Christ “Jesus Christ has been exalted above every other name; we long for the day when every knee shall bow to him and every tongue shall confess him Lord.” LC 3 The Goal of Evangelism ”…at the name of Jesus every knee should bow... and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.” Philippians 2:10,11

The Power of the Holy Spirit “We believe in the power of the Holy Spirit. The Father sent his Spirit to bear witness to his Son; without his witness ours is futile. Conviction of sin, faith in Christ, new birth and Christian growth are all his work.” LC 14 The power of the Holy Spirit is the only ground on which we can hope for results. “My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit's power.” 1 Corinthians 2:4

The Power of the Holy Spirit All four main stages in conversion to Christ are the work of the Holy Spirit 1. the Spirit … will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment. (John 16:8) 2. the Spirit opens the eyes of sinners to see in Jesus their Savior and Lord, and to believe in him. “ Therefore I tell you that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, ‘Jesus be cursed,’ and no one can say, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ except by the Holy Spirit.” 1 Corinthians 12:3

The Power of the Holy Spirit 3. The new birth is a birth “of the Spirit” “Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’” John 3: Christian growth or sanctification is also the work of the Spirit “ And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord's glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.” 2 Corinthians 3:18

The Power of the Holy Spirit “Worldwide evangelization will become a realistic possibility only when the Spirit renews the Church in truth and wisdom, faith, holiness, love and power.” LC 14 “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Acts 1:8

The Return of Christ The return of Jesus Christ is the ultimate goal to which we look. “We believe that Jesus Christ will return personally and visibly, in power and glory, to bring to completion his salvation and his judgment. This promise of his coming is a further spur to our evangelism, for we remember his words that the gospel must first be preached to all nations.” LC 15 “So Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many people; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him.” Hebrews 9:28

The Return of Christ “Meanwhile, we re-dedicate ourselves to the service of Christ and of people in joyful submission to his authority over the whole of our lives.” LC 15. “… All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:18-20
