1 Holy Spirit – Part 1 The Force behind The Movement
Grace Community Church 10/16/2005

2 Promise & Arrival Acts 1:8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. Acts 2:1-4a When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit…

3 Understanding The Spirit
His Personality – Who? His Purpose – What? Salvation Sanctification (next week) His Power – How? (next week)

4 Holy Spirit Is A Personality.
Personal pronouns are used of him… John 14:26 and John 16:13 Personal characteristics are ascribed to him. He regenerates John 3:5 He teaches John 14:26 He bears witness John 15:26 He convicts John 16:8-11 He guides into truth John 16:13 He glorifies Christ John 16:14

5 Holy Spirit Is Deity Attributes that can only be true of God are true of Him. Eternal (Heb 9:14) Omniscient (1 Cor 2:10) Omnipotent (Luke 1:35) Omnipresent (Psalm 139:7-10) The words and works of the Holy Spirit are considered as the words and works of God (Isaiah 6:9, John 12:39-41, Acts 28:25-27, Exodus 16:7, etc…)

6 Experience Never Determines Truth
3 Dimensions 2 Dimensions

7 Spirit’s Purpose In Salvation (Conviction)
John 16:8-11 8When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment: 9in regard to sin, because men do not believe in me; 10in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; 11and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned.

8 Spirit’s Purpose In Salvation (Regeneration)
John 3:5-8 5Jesus answered, “I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. 6Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. 7You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’ 8The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”

9 Spirit’s Purpose In Salvation
John 3: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.

10 Spirit’s Purpose In Salvation (Indwelling & Sealing)
Ephesians 1:13-14 13And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, 14who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory.
