Jesus Our Savior Lord and Example Lesson 2 Humble Obedient Self-denying Servant

Jesus Our Savior Lord and Example “…leaving you an example for you to follow in His steps,” Humble obedient self-denying servant Depended on the Father through prayer The greatest teacher His love mercy and compassion Endured suffering while trusting the Father

Introduction We live in an age where we are told we must always insist on having our rights We are also told that we should not be greatly concerned with obeying all the apostles’ teaching And we are told that if the Christian does not fight to control sinning, God’s grace will cover us Finally we are told that being a servant is a demeaning existence

Introduction But, when we look at Jesus our perfect example, we see the opposite of these attitudes His great desire was to do the will of God Jesus said that being a servant guided by God’s will is great in the sight of God He laid aside self and placed God and others before Himself Let us study and learn to imitate Jesus instead of the world

Humble Obedient Self-denying Servant Jesus humbled Himself before God desiring to do all the Father’s will Jesus denied Himself to serve God and others Jesus displayed obedience to the Father in all areas of life We must humbly serve the Lord and others, denying ourselves and obeying Him in all areas of life

Jesus’ Greatest Desire Was To Do The Father’s Will Joh 4:34 Jesus *said to them, "My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me and to accomplish His work. Joh 5:30 "I can do nothing on My own initiative. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is just, because I do not seek My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me. Joh 6:38 "For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.

Jesus Humbled Himself To Be Obedient To The Father Php 2:5 Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, Php 2:6 who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, Php 2:7 but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men.

Jesus Humbled Himself To Be Obedient To The Father Php 2:8 Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Php 2:9 For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name,

Jesus Humbled Himself To Be Obedient To The Father Php 2:10 so that at the name of Jesus EVERY KNEE WILL BOW, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, Php 2:11 and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Jesus Denied Himself To Serve God and Others Mar 8:31 And He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. Mar 8:32 And He was stating the matter plainly. And Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him.

Jesus Denied Himself To Serve God and Others Mar 8:33 But turning around and seeing His disciples, He rebuked Peter and *said, "Get behind Me, Satan; for you are not setting your mind on God's interests, but man's." Mar 8:34 And He summoned the crowd with His disciples, and said to them, "If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me.

Jesus Denied Himself To Serve God and Others Mar 8:35 "For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel's will save it. Mar 8:36 "For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world, and forfeit his soul?

Jesus Denied Himself To Serve God and Others Mat 20:25 But Jesus called them to Himself and said, "You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great men exercise authority over them. Mat 20:26 "It is not this way among you, but whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant,

Jesus Denied Himself To Serve God and Others Mat 20:27 and whoever wishes to be first among you shall be your slave; Mat 20:28 just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many."

Jesus Serving The Apostles The Night Before He Died Joh 13:3 Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He had come forth from God and was going back to God, Joh 13:4 *got up from supper, and *laid aside His garments; and taking a towel, He girded Himself.

Jesus Serving The Apostles The Night Before He Died Joh 13:5 Then He *poured water into the basin, and began to wash the disciples' feet and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded. Joh 13:12 So when He had washed their feet, and taken His garments and reclined at the table again, He said to them, "Do you know what I have done to you?

Jesus Serving The Apostles The Night Before He Died Joh 13:15 "For I gave you an example that you also should do as I did to you. Joh 13:16 "Truly, truly, I say to you, a slave is not greater than his master, nor is one who is sent greater than the one who sent him.

Jesus Was Obedient To The Father In All things Joh 8:28 So Jesus said, "When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He, and I do nothing on My own initiative, but I speak these things as the Father taught Me. Joh 8:29 "And He who sent Me is with Me; He has not left Me alone, for I always do the things that are pleasing to Him."

Jesus Was Obedient To The Father In All things Mat 23:23 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and cummin, and have neglected the weightier provisions of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness; but these are the things you should have done without neglecting the others.

Jesus Was Obedient To His Parents Luk 2:51 And He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and He continued in subjection to them; and His mother treasured all these things in her heart. Luk 2:52 And Jesus kept increasing in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.

Jesus Was Obedient To Civil Government Mar 12:13 Then they *sent some of the Pharisees and Herodians to Him in order to trap Him in a statement. Mar 12:14 They *came and *said to Him, "Teacher, we know that You are truthful and defer to no one; for You are not partial to any, but teach the way of God in truth. Is it lawful to pay a poll-tax to Caesar, or not?

Jesus Was Obedient To Civil Government Mar 12:15 "Shall we pay or shall we not pay?" But He, knowing their hypocrisy, said to them, "Why are you testing Me? Bring Me a denarius to look at." Mar 12:16 They brought one. And He *said to them, "Whose likeness and inscription is this?" And they said to Him, "Caesar's."

Jesus Was Obedient To Civil Government Mar 12:17 And Jesus said to them, "Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's." And they were amazed at Him.

Jesus Was Obedient By Dying On The Cross Joh 10:17 "For this reason the Father loves Me, because I lay down My life so that I may take it again. Joh 10:18 "No one has taken it away from Me, but I lay it down on My own initiative. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This commandment I received from My Father."

Why Not Become A Christian By Obeying Jesus Today? Heb 5:8 Although He was a Son, He learned obedience from the things which He suffered. Heb 5:9 And having been made perfect, He became to all those who obey Him the source of eternal salvation,

Why Not Become A Christian By Obeying Jesus Today? Act 2:37 Now when they heard this, they were pierced to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Brethren, what shall we do?" Act 2:38 Peter said to them, "Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Why Not Be Restored As A Christian By Obeying Jesus Today? Act 8:22 "Therefore repent of this wickedness of yours, and pray the Lord that, if possible, the intention of your heart may be forgiven you. Act 8:24 But Simon answered and said, "Pray to the Lord for me yourselves, so that nothing of what you have said may come upon me."

Humble Obedient Self denying Servant Jesus humbled Himself before God desiring to do all the Father’s will Jesus denied Himself to serve God and others Jesus displayed obedience to the Father in all areas of life We must humbly serve the Lord and others, denying ourselves and obeying Him in all areas of life

We Must Be Willing To Humbly Obey The Lord Mat 18:2 And He called a child to Himself and set him before them, Mat 18:3 and said, "Truly I say to you, unless you are converted and become like children, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven. Mat 18:4 "Whoever then humbles himself as this child, he is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

We Must Be Willing To Humbly Obey The Lord Jas 4:10 Humble yourselves in the presence of the Lord, and He will exalt you. 1Pe 5:5 You younger men, likewise, be subject to your elders; and all of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, for GOD IS OPPOSED TO THE PROUD, BUT GIVES GRACE TO THE HUMBLE.

Denying Self That We May Become A Christian Rom 6:3 Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death? Rom 6:4 Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.

Denying Self That We May Become A Christian Rom 6:5 For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection, Rom 6:6 knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin; Rom 6:7 for he who has died is freed from sin.

Denying Self That We May Grow As A Christian Rom 6:11 Even so consider yourselves to be dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus. Rom 6:12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its lusts,

Denying Self That We May Grow As A Christian Rom 6:13 and do not go on presenting the members of your body to sin as instruments of unrighteousness; but present yourselves to God as those alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God.

Denying Self That We May Grow As A Christian Eph 4:25 Therefore, laying aside falsehood, SPEAK TRUTH EACH ONE of you WITH HIS NEIGHBOR, for we are members of one another. Eph 4:26 BE ANGRY, AND yet DO NOT SIN; do not let the sun go down on your anger, Eph 4:27 and do not give the devil an opportunity.

Denying Self That We May Grow As A Christian Eph 4:28 He who steals must steal no longer; but rather he must labor, performing with his own hands what is good, so that he will have something to share with one who has need. Eph 4:29 Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear.

Denying Self That We May Grow As A Christian Eph 4:30 Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Eph 4:31 Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. Eph 4:32 Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you.

Denying Self That We May Serve Others Php 2:1 Therefore if there is any encouragement in Christ, if there is any consolation of love, if there is any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and compassion, Php 2:2 make my joy complete by being of the same mind, maintaining the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose.

Denying Self That We May Serve Others Php 2:3 Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves; Php 2:4 do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others.

Denying Self That We May Serve Others Php 2:5 Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, Php 2:6 who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped,

Denying Self That We May Serve Others Php 2:7 but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. Php 2:8 Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.

Denying Self That We May Serve Others Gal 5:13 For you were called to freedom, brethren; only do not turn your freedom into an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. Gal 5:14 For the whole Law is fulfilled in one word, in the statement, "YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF."

Denying Self That We May Serve Others Gal 5:15 But if you bite and devour one another, take care that you are not consumed by one another. Gal 5:16 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh.

Denying Self That We May Serve Others Heb 10:23 Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful; Heb 10:24 and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, Heb 10:25 not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near.

Denying Self That We May Serve Others 1Pe 4:10 As each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.

Denying Self That We May Serve Others 1Pe 4:11 Whoever speaks, is to do so as one who is speaking the utterances of God; whoever serves is to do so as one who is serving by the strength which God supplies; so that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belongs the glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.

Obeying The Lord In All Areas of Our Lives Col 3:15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body; and be thankful. Col 3:16 Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God.

Obeying The Lord In All Areas of Our Lives Col 3:17 Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father. Col 3:18 Wives, be subject to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. Col 3:19 Husbands, love your wives and do not be embittered against them.

Obeying The Lord In All Areas of Our Lives Col 3:20 Children, be obedient to your parents in all things, for this is well-pleasing to the Lord. Col 3:21 Fathers, do not exasperate your children, so that they will not lose heart. Col 3:22 Slaves, in all things obey those who are your masters on earth, not with external service, as those who merely please men, but with sincerity of heart, fearing the Lord.

Obeying The Lord In All Areas of Our Lives Col 3:23 Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men, Col 3:24 knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance. It is the Lord Christ whom you serve. Col 3:25 For he who does wrong will receive the consequences of the wrong which he has done, and that without partiality.

Obeying The Lord In All Areas of Our Lives Col 4:1 Masters, grant to your slaves justice and fairness, knowing that you too have a Master in heaven.

Obeying The Lord In All Areas of Our Lives 1Pe 2:13 Submit yourselves for the Lord's sake to every human institution, whether to a king as the one in authority, 1Pe 2:14 or to governors as sent by him for the punishment of evildoers and the praise of those who do right. 1Pe 2:15 For such is the will of God that by doing right you may silence the ignorance of foolish men.

Obeying The Lord In All Areas of Our Lives Act 5:27 When they had brought them, they stood them before the Council. The high priest questioned them, Act 5:28 saying, "We gave you strict orders not to continue teaching in this name, and yet, you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and intend to bring this man's blood upon us."

Obeying The Lord In All Areas of Our Lives Act 5:29 But Peter and the apostles answered, "We must obey God rather than men. Act 5:30 "The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom you had put to death by hanging Him on a cross.

Obeying The Lord In All Areas of Our Lives Act 5:31 "He is the one whom God exalted to His right hand as a Prince and a Savior, to grant repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins. Act 5:32 "And we are witnesses of these things; and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey Him."
