ARMY NURSE CORPS MISSION All actions and tasks must lead and work toward promoting the wellness of Warriors and their families, supporting the delivery of Warrior and family healthcare, and all those entrusted to our care and ultimately, positioning the Army Nurse Corps as a force multiplier for the future of military medicine.

Our Mission The James Madison University “Duke” Battalion commissions 24 Line and 2 Nurse Second Lieutenants during fiscal year 2015 to meet US Army leadership requirements, who can think creatively and adaptively to lead small unit organizations, who can thrive in uncertainty and who will develop the character to be better citizens, committed to life long service to both their community and nation through military service. 1. ROTC identifies a person’s leadership potential and helps them to maximize it. In order to accomplish this task, ROTC cadets are placed in situations of controlled-stress and guided in the process of critical thinking and effectual decision making. At the conclusion of formal leadership exercises (STX, FLRC, FTXs, etc.) cadets undergo a process of reflective-integrative learning: they state what they did, what they learned, and what they can do better next time. The cadet then receives a formal, written evaluation by an instructor to reinforce the learning process. This learning paradigm builds upon past experiences to enhance self-awareness, instill confidence, and contribute to personal growth. 2. ROTC is set up much like the School of Nursing. A platform of didactic and clinical instruction is undertaken to instill the ability to do the job. Variation in the milieu of learning, enhances critical thinking skills and applicability. This is important because most problems in the professional world are nonlinear. 3. Credit for participation in ROTC is awarded as general elective credit applied towards degree completion. Contracted cadets can also seek a minor in Military Leadership. ROTC cadets are afforded the opportunity to attend Army Professional Schools. Experiences range from jumping out of perfectly good airplanes to learning how to survive in an Arctic Environment. For nurses, there is a specialized program open only to them. It’s called the Nurse Summer Training Program. Endstate: An effective Army ROTC Program who turns willing young adults into tomorrow’s leaders of the Army, who are armed with lifelong skills to adapt, learn, and contribute through selfless service to their nation and community.

Perceptions Vs Reality The axiom that “perception is 9/10 of reality” is central. Most of us formulate our perceptions based on what we see, hear, experience, or feel. Yet if our perception is not grounded in fact, then it can lead us to formulate thoughts and opinions that do not rightly reflect reality. This idea is illustrated by the public’s view of nursing. Many lay persons think all nurses are the same. They do not understand the difference in educational backgrounds of Registered Nurses (RNs), Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), and Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs). In their eyes, a nurse is a nurse. Few understand that the profession of nursing is made up of professionals with varying levels of education and clinical or managerial specialization. The Army Nurse Corps has a similar struggle. Most think Army nurses crawl around in mud up to their elbows, kill people, and break things. They have never had an Army nurse tell them about the unique challenges and rewards associated with the Army Nurse Corps. Tragically, the idea of what Army Nursing is about is derived from popular shows, such as M*A*S*H and China Beach. Yet these fail to accurately portray the practice of professional Army nurses. The focus of these shows is on character experiences, devoid of an accurate portrayal of their profession.

Nursing Program Benefits ARMY ROTC SCHOLARSHIP Four, three and two-year scholarships are available. The Army ROTC scholarship pays 100% of tuition/fees plus $1200/year for books. ROTC Time Commitment Classroom: 1-3 hours per week (MS level dependent). (MSCI 101 – 1 credit class) Leadership Lab: 2 hours per week (hands on training). (MSCI 100 – 1 credit lab) Physical Fitness Training: 3-5 hours per week. Cadet Company Meetings: 1 hour per week. Weekly Study Time & Extracurricular Events: 2-4 hours. Other Nursing Cadet Benefits NSTP (Nurse Summer Training Program) One-time payment to cover cost of required uniforms, lab coat, shoes, accessories, and equipment. Army pays for NCLEX-RN review course (ranges from $250 - $400). Army pays for NCLEX-RN Test. Summer Cadet Leader training.

Nurse Summer Training Program (NSTP) Typically attends after completion of CLC between junior and senior year 120hr Clinical Opportunity College Credit 1:1 training with RN in a military hospital setting Learn junior officer role 1. The Nurse Summer Training Program (NSTP) is an optional 3-week clinical experience. Work settings include medical, surgical, intensive care, same day surgery, and step down. Limited experiences are available in the OR, ER, OB-GYN, and Pediatric wards. 2. Most universities offer nursing elective credit for attending this course. The primary course objective is to convey an accurate picture of nursing in the Army Nurse Corps and instill confidence in each nursing cadet’s ability to administer safe and effective patient care. 3. How many of your students have the opportunity to work 1:1 with a RN during clinicals? Most schools are not staffed to offer this opportunity. Yet this is the set up of NSTP. Stress is placed on the formulation of a coaching relationship between preceptor and student nurse. 4. Army officers are leaders. In the Army Nurse Corps, RNs are leaders on their wards. Many nursing students are too busy learning how to be a nurse, to appreciate the clinical differences in scope of practice among healthcare professionals who have the title “nurse” (be they LPNs, CNAs, etc.). NSTP allows nursing students the opportunity to see how the different types of nurses work in a concerted effort, to ensure each patient receives the utmost quality of care. 5. Finally, most nursing students will be afforded the rare opportunity to shadow the charge nurse and perform some of the requisite duties. The Army Nurse Corps places a premium on education.

Specialty Tracks Critical Care Nursing Operating Room Nursing OB/GYN Course Public Health Nursing Emergency Room Nursing Psych/Mental Health Nursing All scholarship nurse cadets are offered the Generic Course Guarantee. This stipulates that within 6 months after being on active duty, new grads may elect to attend 1 of 6 specialty courses in nursing. Army nurses are not thrust into new environments without being equipped with the necessary tools to succeed. Each of the specialty courses is 16 weeks in length and combines full time study with clinical exposure. At the conclusion of each course, Army nurses are afforded the opportunity to track a career in their specialty area or med-surg (the foundation of nursing practice). Most Army nurses will spend 4-6 years at the bedside, providing direct patient care. At the conclusion of this time, Army nurses must choose one of two paths. Either they may transition to the role of Head Nurse or put in a request for fully-funded graduate school.

An example of one of these hospitals is Womack Army Medical Center. The hospital opened its doors in the spring of 2001. It is located on Ft Bragg, NC and services the needs of one of the largest concentrations of Army soldiers, their family members, and retiree populations in the United States.
