Brief Summary. Basically in chapter 14, Becca and Stan are trying to find answers to the life that Gemma lived and to accomplish the promise which was made. However, they manage to finally discover the location of where Gemma lived in the ‘castle’ which was the Polish town of Kulmhof. Characters include Becca, Stan, Samantha & Harvey Goldman.

How does it fit into the overall plotline? This chapter is essential to the plotline as it is one of the many clues that Becca needs to fulfil her dying grandmother’s wish about her tortured past. Kulmhof is the destination where Becca needs to travel to, so she can get a better understanding of Gemma’s life.

Flashback is used towards the end of the chapter and refers to the phone call Becca had made to Harvey Goldman. Becca was curious about Kulmhof and the connection it had with Gemma. Quote: “Kulmhof!”. “My God!” “In the darkest regions of hell.”

Links to fairytale. Similarities & differences. In this particular chapter, there is the discovery of Kulmhof which is referred to the ‘castle’ by Gemma.

Themes ( name, how and why are they presented?) Discovery: this is the most important theme within this chapter as Becca and Stan discover the place when Gemma once lived. They find the location through the many documents Gemma had stashed away in her private wooden box. It is presented as a kind of breakthrough in the search of Gemma’s past.
