SPERM WHALES By Shaneelah Rashed

CONTENTS  What is a Sperm Whale?  Where does a Sperm Whale live?  What does a Sperm Whale look like?  What NOT to Do With A Sperm Whale  Bibliography

What is a Sperm Whale? A Sperm Whale is by far the largest of the toothed whales. A fully grown male can weigh more than 50 tons! Sperm whales feed mainly on squid, which it hunts in deep water. The sperm whale is not considered dangerous, but it can easily overturn small boats.

Where does a Sperm Whale live? Sperm whales are found in many open oceans, both in tropical and cool waters. Sperm whales live at the surface of the ocean but dive very deeply to catch the giant squid.

What Does A Sperm Whale Look Like? They have a 4 – 12 inch thick layer of blubber protecting their skin. Their large, cone-shaped teeth are in the lower jaw only, and their blowhole is about at the nose of their box-like head (of course, the blowhole acts as a nose to it). They have extremely small flippers. The ear, as you can see on the diagram, is next to the eye. It is also quite close to the small flipper. The eye, of course is next to the ear, and also quite close to the mouth. Sperm whales have dark gray to black skin, and they have small humps on their backs. Their tails are made out of two wide flukes, and in between, a median notch, like shown in the diagram.

What NOT To Do With A Sperm Whale If you ever come across a sperm whale, these are what you SHOULDN’T do.  Run up to it and poke about its blowhole  Jump on its back  Annoy it somehow, call it names, provoke it etc. (hey, animals know what calling names are you know.)
