7 th Grade Vocabulary Mrs. Kim Johnson Pike County Middle School Zebulon, Georgia

7 th Grade Standards ELA7R2 The student understands and acquires new vocabulary and uses it correctly in reading and writing. The student a. Determines the meaning of unfamiliar words using context clues (e.g., contrast, cause and effect, etc.). b. Uses knowledge of Greek, Latin, and Anglo-Saxon roots and affixes to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words. c. Identifies and explains idioms and analogies in prose and poetry. d. Determines word meanings through the use of definition, example, restatement, or contrast.

How do we master this standard and these elements this year? To determine the meaning of unfamiliar words using context clues (e.g., contrast, cause and effect, etc.), we will become Word Wizards in our Literature Circles. As we read, we encounter new words. We will identify these words and bring them to our literature circle discussion groups.

How do we master this standard and these elements this year? To show that we can use our knowledge of Greek, Latin, and Anglo-Saxon roots and affixes to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words, we will focus on the study of approximately ten new root words each week. Then, we’ll be able to use that knowledge to figure out the meanings of words like pneumonultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis

Any ideas? By using our combined knowledge of root words within this word, we will logically be able to conclude that this word refers to a medical condition known as “black lung disease.” The point of studying the etymology of words is that the English language is comprised of more than 50% of these roots. If we know them, we are more able to manipulate them in various contexts to decode meanings of new words.

How do we master this standard and these elements this year? To show that we can identify and explain idioms and analogies in prose and poetry, we will have an idiom or analogy of the day. As part of our bell ringer activities, we will discuss the meanings of daily idioms and relationships between word sets.

How do we master this standard and these elements? To determine word meanings through the use of definition, example, restatement, or contrast, we will have the Word du Jour (Word of the Day) as part of our bell ringer activities. We will use the most common PSAT and SAT vocabulary words to uncover meanings by using the dictionary and thesaurus to define the daily word, give synonyms, give antonyms, use in a sentence, and illustrate.

Get ready! By using combined activities as strategies for mastering new vocabulary, we will master this 7 th grade standard and all of its elements.
