WORD PROBLEMS… YUCK!!! I DON’T GET IT!!

Why do we need to solve them? Let’s See!

Every Day, whether you know it or not, you are faced with word problems. For example; How much money should I bring for lunch? Don’t you have to use math and reading to solve this problem? When you go to the movies at the mall, don’t you have to read and use math to figure out how much money you will need? When you attempt to open your locker each day, don’t you use math and reading to open your lock? You can see that solving word problems is part of your every day life whether you like it or not. So… how can we make solving these word problems easier? Let’s take a look….

One way that we can make solving word problems easier is to use the reading process steps. What the heck are those steps again? I forgot them already! 1. Predict using title, pictures, and headings. 2. Read, reread confusing parts, look up any unfamiliar words. 3. Respond and react by coming up with opinions, feelings and solutions…always check to make sure your solutions are accurate. Now, let’s look at an example!
