Overview of Self Application Landscape Weed management programs are continuing to become more complex. Growers have a lot at stake if their fields aren’t taken care of properly. Safe, effective herbicide applications help maximize yields, protect input investments and ultimately help protect their lifelong investment in their farm.

Efficacy vs. On Target Application Research The lead purpose for applying crop protection products, specifically herbicides, is to end up with ‘good’ weed control. Recent field research has been designed to evaluate the many nozzle choices that are designated for this purpose. The work has shown us that if used correctly, the various nozzle types can be effective for each purpose – weed control and on target application.

Weed Control – Dicamba + Glyphosate + AMS 6-inch weeds  Control of grass, crabgrass, cocklebur, and waterhemp was highly effective – no differences (not shown)  Control of tall morningglory – reduced efficacy but still no significant differences

Applicator Education State certification courses provide application basics, and regulatory requirements help maintain proper herbicide applications, however there’s a need for grower-focused training that is more hands on and goes into greater detail. There are many decisions growers must make in order to make safe and effective applications to their fields. We need to bring the research we’ve done out to the applicator so they have a deeper understanding of the mechanics behind the application.
