Presentation transcript:

Line of balance and elemental trend analysis Project management

Line of Balance (LoB) A conventional network technique applied to develop and control a single batch. It was developed as a production planning tool before PNTs. It has a much less wide application area.

Requirements of LoB Identifiable stages in production to exert managerial control. Known manufacturing times between stages. Delivery schedule. Resources can be varied as required.

Elemental trend analysis (= LoB) requirements Items in the batch are independent of each other Same resource carries out the same activity on every item in the batch Only one resource can work on a given item Any resource constraints must be removed before the analysis

Where it is useful? Why not using a PNT here? Construction industry Heavy engineering assembly Road or railway building … Why not using a PNT here?

Problem solving example There is a project of building 5 identical row houses. On each house 4 work units (items) should be made, each by a specialized team of workers: Foundations (team A): 1 month per house, Brickwork (team B): 2 months per house, Roof construction (team C): 2 weeks per house, Internal works (team D): 1 month per house Plot a LoB chart. Follower team can start working on a given unit immediately after the predecessor team finished. Calculate the TPT. Redesign the LoB chart to eliminate idle time of teams and minimize the TPT.

Solution (a) TPT 12 .5 months House 5 House 4 House 3 House 2 House 1

Solution (b) TPT 14 House 5 House 4 House 3 House 2 House 1 months

Control with LoB If the 2nd team performing only on 75%...

Control with LoB TPT 17 House 5 House 4 House 3 House 2 House 1 months

Line-of-balance   There is a project of planting 6 identical trees in a botanical garden. Planting a tree requires 4 steps of work (each done by a different person): digging: 10 mins prepare the hole for the tree with special nutrients: 5 mins placing the tree into the hole: 5 mins tidy up the surroundings of the tree: 15 mins Plot a LoB chart. Follower worker can start working on a given unit of work immediately after the predecessor team finished. Calculate the TPT. Redesign the LoB chart to eliminate idle time of teams increasing the TPT with only the possible minimum.
