The Wave – Literature Circles The following powerpoint contains discussion questions, vocabulary and writing activities. These assignments are to be completed as you read with your literature circle. You are to answer them in your writer’s notebook. Clearly label each set of responses. There will be notebook checks! Each day we read and work in literature circles you will receive classwork points. Together we will establish norms – you must follow these norms in order to get your work completed and to earn your points.

Norms: The following are what I need to do and what I need from others to be successful. Respect - Silence/Quiet Focus: Be doing what you are supposed to and stay on task Get things done on time – don’t fall behind No “horsing around”! Willing to do your work – participate! Materials: Book, WN, and pencil Pay attention – comprehend the book and listen to each other Don’t talk to other tables Cooperate/ work together

Quick Write – 5 minutes Choose a vocabulary word from Chapter 1 or 2 of The Wave. Use the word as a basis for your quick write, and include humor and hyperbole. Don’t forget a context clue to let the reader know what the word means without telling them the definition. Time your group - 5 minutes. Share your writing with each other.

Chapter 3 and 4 Define the following vocabulary: facetiously regime inexplicable Answer the following questions in complete sentences: 1.Analyze the metaphor about Robert Billings, “Gordon High’s very own Untouchable.” What does it mean? 2. Contrast Laurie and David’s reaction to the film about Hitler. 3. Analyze the cliché, “History always repeats itself.” 4. What is bothering Ross, and what does he intend to do about it? 5. How does Ross’s wife describe him? 6.How does Ross plan to implement his idea to recreate a situation similar to Hitler’s control in Germany?

Discuss the significance of the statement about Robert Billings, “The new head of the class.” 2. Discuss why David wants to introduce The Wave to the football team. 3. Will the techniques of The Wave strengthen the football team? Make a prediction. 4.Note the allusion to Dr. Frankenstein and analyze why Christy calls Ross “Frankenstein.” 5. Analyze the motto and define it – Strength Through Discipline, Strength Through Community, Strength Through Action.

Quick Write Choose a vocabulary word from Chapter 5-8 of The Wave. Use the word as a basis for your quick write, and include a hyphenated modifier. Don’t forget a context clue but do not give the definition of the word. Incessant Astute Appeased Allegiance

Chapter 9&10 Chapter 9 Define the following vocabulary: Glibly Ecstatic Skeptically Indoctrinate Cult Answer the following questions in complete sentences: Do you agree or disagree with Mrs. Saunders’ summation of cults and those who join them? What are Mrs. Saunders’ concerns about The Wave? How does Laurie feel about her mother’s concerns? Chapter 10 Define the following vocabulary: Tremor Tizzy Answer the following questions in complete sentences: Create a T-chart showing the positive and negative aspects of continuing the Wave as Ross views them. Explain the foreshadowing statement “Sometimes they (young, impressionable kids) can take something too far if they’re not watched.”

Characters: Answer the following questions in complete sentences: Who is your favorite or least favorite from the novel? Think of three reasons why they stood out to you. Character Chart Activity As a class we will fill in a few items on a character chart together using the text to identify the characterization used to develop a character. 2. On the back of the character chart you will fill in another chart with the character assigned to you. You must use the book to help you and there are to be 3-5 items in Column A for each category that correlates to Column B. Character Symbols 1. Create a symbol for the character you have been assigned - Robert, Laurie, David or Mr. Ross. The symbol must represent something significant and important about the character. 2. Focus on character development, how the person has changed through the story using your chart as a starting point of who your character was and who they are now after being affected by the Wave. Also, look at the role of the character in the story. 3. Design, create or develop a symbol for the character. This is your visual. 4. Write a clear explanation of the connection between your symbol and the character. This is where you show your understanding of the plot and the role your character plays in the story. 5. You will share with the class and then turn in this assignment and your character chart!

Chapter 12 Define the following vocabulary: Utopian Trivial Answer the following questions in complete sentences: 1.Why did Brian and Deutsch fight? What was David’s explanation of it? 2. Make a prediction of what you think will happen when The Grapevine exposes The Wave: to Laurie, to Mr. Ross, to The Wave, and to the school.

Heartbreak Analyze the significance of Laurie and David’s quarrel over The Wave, and whether or not David’s evaluation of Laurie is valid (starts on p. 87 of mint-colored book).

Chapters 13-15 Define the following vocabulary: Aghast Obsessive Sinister Antagonistic Recoiled Jeopardy Answer the following questions in complete sentences: What impact do the Grapevine articles have on Gordon High? Analyze the symbolism of Laurie “standing alone in the library” on pg. 101 of the mint book. Do you think Laurie’s fear as she leaves the high school at night is justified or not? Have you ever felt like that?
