FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT LOVE (1) LOVE

Galatians 5:22, 23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. Love – Mentioned first Fundamentally first mentioned first fundamentally first

1 Corinthians 13:1-7 (LOVE) 1 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. 2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing. 4 Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; 5 does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; 6 does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; 7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. (1) Three times Paul emphasizes the effects of religion without “love.” Three is a significant number in the Bible! (2) Three times he tells us that without “Love” we are “NOTHING.” But not only do we see “LOVE” in this passage, but allusions to the rest of the fruit of the Spirit.

1 Corinthians 13:1-7 (LOVE) JOY 1 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. Do we recall that the subject of this passage is “love” and that it is “LOVE” that refrains from “joy” over sin, but triumphs in “joy” in areas of truth.

1 Corinthians 13:1-7 (LOVE) PEACE 1 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. Love doesn’t seek its own, it is not provoked. Love is peaceable.

1 Corinthians 13:1-7 (LOVE) LONGSUFFERING 1 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. Love suffers, but “Longsuffering” is the fruit of the Spirit. Love bears extra fruit. Some want love which without suffering But true love will be willing to suffer.

1 Corinthians 13:1-7 (LOVE) KINDNESS 1 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal.

1 Corinthians 13:1-7 (LOVE) GOODNESS 1 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. “Goodness” is all over verse 5. Something that is not rude, doesn’t seek its own, is not provoked and thinks no evil is most definitely “good.”

1 Corinthians 13:1-7 (LOVE) FAITHFULNESS 1 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. We rightly so press the need for faithfulness, but even if we have mountain moving faith that is motivated by something other than love for God, love for truth, love for fellow man, we are pictured as a failure in this passage.

1 Corinthians 13:1-7 (LOVE) GENTLENESS 1 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal.

1 Corinthians 13:1-7 (LOVE) SELFCONTROL 1 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal.

LOVING THE UNSEEN GOD 19 We love Him because He first loved us. 20 If someone says, "I love God," and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen? 21 And this commandment we have from Him: that he who loves God must love his brother also. 1 JOHN 4:19-21 1) saying “I love God” doesn’t equate true love 2) saying “I love God” while hating a brother is nonsensical 3) loving the unseen God compels us to love a brother whom we do see 4) what God has done compels us to love Him

Love Motivates to love others begotten by God Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves Him who begot also loves him who is begotten of Him. 1 JOHN 5:1 This is like our own family unit. A child is to love his parents because they are his parents, because of what their unconditional love provides him. But a child is also to love his siblings, those begotten by his parents.

Love Motivates to love others begotten by God to feel joy But let all those rejoice who put their trust in You; Let them ever shout for joy, because You defend them; Let those also who love Your name Be joyful in You. PSALM 5:11 If we love our parents, it will be a joy to be around them; If we love our children, it will be a joy to be around them; If we love our spouse, it will be a joy to be around her; If we love the Lord, it will be a joy to worship him. Also in - Ps 122:1 A Song of David. I was glad when they said to me, "Let us go into the house of the LORD."

Love Motivates to love others begotten by God to feel joy hatred of sin You who love the Lord, hate evil! He preserves the souls of His saints; He delivers them out of the hand of the wicked. PSALM 97:10 One cannot love “good” and “evil.” Mt 6:24 "No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the One and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.

Love Motivates to love others begotten by God to feel joy hatred of sin full obedience Det 30:20 "that you may love the Lord your God, that you may obey His voice, and that you may cling to Him, for He is your life and the length of your days; and that you may dwell in the land which the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give them."

Love Motivates to love others begotten by God to feel joy hatred of sin full obedience 1John 5:3 For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome. We display our love to God by doing what God commands us. We can know full well that he will not command us to do something that is harmful, or something that is impossible. What he asks of us is for our betterment, not our detriment. Yet it is absurd for a child to tell his parents that he loves them when he lives a life in defiance to their will.

Love Motivates to love others begotten by God to feel joy hatred of sin full obedience fulfill the family role/responsibility The Love that we have for the Lord, his person and authority, enables us to submit to the Lord and fill our place in the family. Paul appeals to our relationship to the Lord in regulating their relationship to another.

Love Motivates Colossians 3:18-21 18 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord. 19 Husbands, love your wives, and be not bitter against them. 20 Children, obey your parents in all things: for this is well pleasing unto the Lord. 21 Fathers, provoke not your children to anger, lest they be discouraged.

Love Motivates to love others begotten by God to feel joy hatred of sin full obedience fulfill the family role/responsibility love those who hate us This is no doubt one of those difficult passages, but we know that Jesus really did such with us, because he died for his enemies. Again, our love for the Lord will affect our reaction to those who hate us.

Love Motivates Matthew 5:44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;

Love Motivates to love others begotten by God to feel joy hatred of sin full obedience fulfill the family role/responsibility love those who hate us love enemy –bless curser good to the hater –pray for persecutor love enemy bless curser good to the hater pray for persecutor Rather difficult issues

Let Love Dominate 35 Then one of them, a lawyer, asked Him a question, testing Him, and saying, 36 "Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?" 37 Jesus said to him, "‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ 38 "This is the first and great commandment. 39 "And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 "On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.“ Matthew 22:35-40 Love must dominate the heart, soul and mind. Otherwise we are just “playing Christian” and just “playing church.” Today is the Lord’s day, let us keep busy in His work! (1) How much should our love be ? ALL

Questions Do you love your neighbor as yourself? Do you love God? Do you love God enough to obey him? Do you love God enough to obey him today? (1) (2) If you say that you love God, but not enough to obey him today, then you are saying that you hate God. (3) (4)

Loveless: Life without Obedience “If you love Me, keep My commandments” John 14:15 “He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him” John 14:21 “He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and the word which you hear is not Mine but the Father’s who sent Me” John 14:24 Three passages that press this point to us today. (1) (2) (3) Every accountable soul is “in” these passages somewhere. Do you see where you are?

Accursed: Life without Love “If anyone does not love the Lord Jesus Christ, let him be accursed.” 1 Corinthians 16:22 “Grace be with all those who love our Lord Jesus Christ in sincerity. Amen.” Ephesians 6:24 Do we remember if we love we obey – You will keep my commandments (1) If we do not love then we are accursed. (2) But if we love we obey and Divine favor are with us. Are we sincerely in love with Jesus?

What Some Love More Than God? The world (1 Jn. 2:15)

What Some Love More Than God? 1 John 2:15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

What Some Love More Than God? Luke 14:26 If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.

What Some Love More Than God? “For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?” MATTHEW 16:26

What do we love more than our own soul? if we love our soul, we gain God’s wisdom Prov 19:8, “He who gets wisdom loves his own soul; He who keeps understanding will find good.” What do we love more than our soul? We gain wisdom through a diligent study of God’s word. (1) Proverbs 19:8 What this passage tells me is that if I want to invest in my soul, I need to invest my time in learning the wisdom of God.

CHRIST & US CHRIST MADE THE ULTIMATE SACRIFICE FOR US AS AN EXPRESSION OF LOVE “For the love of Christ compels us, because we judge thus: that if One died for all, then all died; and He died for all, that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again” (2 COR. 5:14, 15) WHAT DOES YOUR LIFE EXPRESS FOR JESUS?
