1 If I Have Not Love 1 Corinthians 13:1-8

2 If I…

3 Speak the truth but have not love…
Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love… 1 Corinthians 13:1a Speak the truth but have not love…

4 Speak the truth but have not love…
15 but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head—Christ— Ephesians 4:15 Speak the truth but have not love…

5 Speak the truth but have not love…
….I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. 1 Corinthians 13:1b Speak the truth but have not love…

6 Have understanding, knowledge and great faith but have not love…
And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 1 Corinthians 13:2 Have understanding, knowledge and great faith but have not love…

7 Have understanding, knowledge and great faith but have not love…
3 For our exhortation did not come from error or uncleanness, nor was it in deceit. 4 But as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, even so we speak, not as pleasing men, but God who tests our hearts. Have understanding, knowledge and great faith but have not love…

8 Have understanding, knowledge and great faith but have not love…
5 For neither at any time did we use flattering words, as you know, nor a cloak for covetousness—God is witness. 6 Nor did we seek glory from men, either from you or from others, when we might have made demands as apostles of Christ. Have understanding, knowledge and great faith but have not love…

9 Have understanding, knowledge and great faith but have not love…
7 But we were gentle among you, just as a nursing mother cherishes her own children. 8 So, affectionately longing for you, we were well pleased to impart to you not only the gospel of God, but also our own lives, because you had become dear to us. Have understanding, knowledge and great faith but have not love…

10 Have understanding, knowledge and great faith but have not love…
3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing. 1 Corinthians 13:3 Have understanding, knowledge and great faith but have not love…

11 How does love behave?

12 4 Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up;
1 Corinthians 13:4 It Suffers Long

13 “Self-restrain in the face of provocation; it is the opposite of anger” (according to Vine dictionary). It Suffers Long

14 Some define kindness this way – “one who renders gracious well-disposed service to others”.
a. Because of kindness, one’s love: does not parade itself, is not puffed up, does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil, does not rejoice in iniquity. (v.5) Kind

15 6 does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth;
1 Corinthians 13:6 Rejoices in the Truth

16 Rejoices when one is complimented and commended for goodness and good done.
Rejoices in the Truth

17 7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
1 Corinthians 13:7 Bears all things

18 Supports during illness; is patient with the immaturity of the one loved.
Bears all things

19 Confidence that the motives of actions are pure.
Believes all things

20 Trusts that the problems or heartaches of the present will give way to better times.
Hopes all things

21 Love will continue in the face of criticism, ingratitude, and unpleasant behavior.
Endures all things

22 Lessons for us today

23 The lack of love only causes problems and heartache.
1. Lack of love in the home is never good. It is harmful and causes a strain on relationships, to say the least. 2. The same happens when there is a lack of love in the church. The lack of love only causes problems and heartache.

24 The lack of love only causes problems and heartache.
3. Brethren should love and respect one another, even in differences. 4. Anything less is not only unloving but it is displeasing to God. The lack of love only causes problems and heartache.

25 Where love is, more love will abound
1. Where there is love there is happiness, contentment and appreciation for one another. 2. Love covers or forgives a multitude of sins Where love is, more love will abound

26 Where love is, more love will abound
And above all things have fervent love for one another, for “love will cover a multitude of sins.” 1 Peter 4:8 Where love is, more love will abound

27 Do we have love for one another?
Since you have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit in sincere love of the brethren, love one another fervently with a pure heart, 1 Peter 1:22 Conclusion

28 2. Love never fails. Love solves many problems.
Conclusion

29 Christ’s loving sacrifice on our behalf should be a reminder.
16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. John 3:16 Conclusion
