Bellwork- Where is Keswick and Why did it Flood? Look back at your sheets from last lesson Where is Keswick located? Be specific, what is it near (human and physical location) What factors made Keswick severely affected by the flooding in 2009?

Flooding in Cumbria Learning Objectives: Outline key facts about the flooding in 2009 Develop source analysis techniques Annotate photographs to show damage caused by flooding

Table Teams In today’s lesson we’ll be working on our tables to complete an activity based on the sources found in “Weathering the Storm” This will help you to build a case study, as well as develop your ability to describe, analyse, annotate, outline etc. information from different sources You’ll have 7 minutes to complete each activity

Task 1 Each person should cut out 1 copy of each of the photographs and stick them on their page with enough room to annotate around the sides Annotate (with accurate arrows) the damage you can see in each of the photos and discuss (in a written form) the effects/implications of the damage

Task 2 Read the text “The Policeman’s Story” There are 3 envelopes around the room with a different question on them Write your answer to each question on a piece of paper and put this in the correct envelope

Task 3 Read the source, “ s Showing KFAG Build Up” Create a timeline to show what has happened over the 2 day period Your scale must be even and accurate

Task 4 Read through the stories from the Keswick and Braithwaite children Use post it notes to summarise the effects that the children have described Sort these post it notes into the correct areas on the A3 to classify the effects of the floods Photocopy this sheet so you have 1 copy each

Task 5 Take a photocopy of “The Aftermath” and create a key using highlighters to classify information into the following areas: Do you think the response to the flooding was adequate? Discuss in your groups and then note down some ideas in the blank space provided Stakeholders Actions taken to reduce/fix damage caused Problems with the response

Plenary To what extent do you agree with the following statement? “The flooding in Cumbria in 2009 was of more importance to the government of the UK than the flooding in Manila to the government in the Philippines” Be prepared to justify where you’re standing
