Garrett Augustus Morgan
Early Life Garrett A. Morgan was born on March 4, 1877, in Paris, Kentucky, to former slaves Sydney Morgan and Elizabeth Reed Morgan. He was the seventh of eleven children. He spent his childhood attending school and working with his brothers and sisters on the family farm. When he was fourteen, he moved north to Cincinnati, Ohio in search of employment.
Achievements His first invention was a belt fastener for a sewing machine, which he designed while working for a clothing manufacturer. Driven and hardworking, in 1907 Morgan opened his own sewing machine business and later a clothing manufacturing business. After witnessing an accident involving a horse-pulled buggy and an automobile at a street intersection, Morgan put his creative problem solving talents to work and created the electric traffic light signal. Morgan received a patent for this invention in He sold rights to this invention to General Electric Company for $40,000 shortly afterwards.
Interesting Facts Garrett Augustus Morgan is best known for his invention of the automatic traffic signal. He also is the inventor of the gas mask, used by firemen in the early 1900s and by soldiers in W W 1. Morgan was an honorary member of Alpha Phi Alpha, the first intercollegiate Greek-letter organization established for African Americans.
Death Garrett Augustus Morgan died on July 27, 1963.
