Helmet Challenge Design Challenge

Steps of Design: Brainstorm Draw Design Build Test Analyze Redesign/modify Retest Analyze

Problem Your team is part of the equipment designing firm, Boogie Down Sporting Goods Company. Your firm has been hired to design a helmet that can protect players and withstand a maximum impact speed. The team in the firm that comes up with the most effective design will get the contract for the account.

Your design must: Stay on the head (egg)during testing. Keep the skull from cracking. Helmet must be able to come off and on Remember, the team whose helmet withstands the maximum impact speed wins.

At the end, each of you will need to : Summarize Write a report about your final design, how well your design met the challenge, and what further modifications you would make. Must also tell if the brain was injured what symptoms would the person experience

And Present as a group Prepare poster presentation for your peers. –Must include your brainstorm –Must include all of your drawings –Must include your data

Day 1 Brainstorm with your partners: –What information do you need to know that will help you to be successful with your mission? –Write your brainstorming ideas down in on your brainstorm worksheet.

Draw Create a labeled drawing of your solution. Be as detailed as possible in your drawings, including dimensions. Make a list of the materials you plan on using Remember you can modify your drawing and list

Materials available: Paper cups Paper clips String Cardboard Straws newspaper Rubber bands Small balloons Sand Masking Tape Netting Egg carton pieces

Maximum Impact Speed Speed is determined by the following formula: Speed = distance/time You will determine the maximum impact speed of your helmet by performing three trials and calculating the speed for each trial.
