Background  Hobos were extremely popular during the depression witch is how the Scottsboro Trials came to be.  This began March 25, 1931 because two white women attempted to wrongly convict nine black men accused of rape.  A fight broke out on the freight train, and the whites were thrown off the train. Daily Worker Photograph. Scottsboro headline, 1932., Chicago. Web. 18 Nov 2013.

*Continued  They were going to be charged with assault until two white women dressed as males were discovered.  The women who had “relations” with the white males were afraid that the police would discover the truth, so, they claimed rape against the nine black men.  The nine young men were being tried for rape and eventually charged with rape. Lyman, Brian. Supporters of Scottsboro Boys want airtight case Photograph. n.p. Web. 18 Nov 2013.

*Continued  In 1932 the court system over ruled the conviction due to false evidence on the defendant.  The state later tried one of the boys, Haywood Patterson, and he was convicted a second time. Though, the judge believed the fact that he did not commit the crime accused.  The state again tried another of the boys, and, he was sentenced to death. Then the court overruled the sentence, stating that they excluded blacks from jurries. Frankel, Tony Photograph. n.p. Web. 18 Nov 2013.

*Continued  They again tried the first boy, Haywood Patterson, and sentenced him to 75 years in prison.  Alabama released the four youngest of the boys, who served six years of prison, and later paroled all but Patterson.  Patterson escaped from prison and found his way up to Michigan, where in three years he was convicted for manslaughter and died in prison.  The last known survivor later went to the north in 1946 after his parole, and was granted a full pardon by the Albanian governor in ‘76.

Newspaper Article  During the boys’ trials they had many encounters for publicity, this is one of many.  After it was discovered they were innocent many movies were made. Daily Worker Photograph. Scottsboro headline, 1932., Chicago. Web. 18 Nov 2013.
