1 The Scottsboro Trials Bobo, Jirah, Yeiri, & Cloe

2 Background March 25, 1931 Alabama
Illegally riding the rails of a train The nine boys got in a fight with white men The boys were arrested for a minor charge Two women were pressured by the deputies to cry gang rape The women were said to not really be raped but testified against the black boys because they feared prosecution due to sexual encounters with white men

3 "The Scottsboro Boys" Charlie Weems, Ozie Powell, Olen Montgomery, Willie Roberson, Haywood Patterson, Eugene Williams, & Andrew and Leroy Wright. Leroy was the youngest at age13 Ages were 13-19 Victoria Price and Ruby Bates were the accusers Orville Gilley and Dr. R. R. Bridges were the key witnesses

4 The Trial Stephan Roddy and Milo Moody represented the boys
Roddy was a drunk, Moody was 70 The boys were tried in groups of three 8/9 of the boys life sentenced Mistrial for Leroy January 5, 1932 Ruby Bates sent a letter to her boyfriend saying the rape never happened. Soon after the letter was discovered the Court re-opens the case .

5 Punishment 8 out of the boys were sentenced to death
Leroy Wright, the youngest out of the group at age 13 was sentenced to life time imprisonment After Ruby Bates one of the accusers came forward the boys were let go one by one It took as long as 20 years until the last boy was released

6 The Uproar The north was very upset with discrimination and started protests Many movies and books were inspired on this event This event brought attention to how barbarically blacks were treated
