© 2012 Autodesk 3D Systems Ltd & Teach Design Ltd Developing Concept Sketching Having developed a series of initial ideas, you now need to focus on the manufacture and function of the product. You will also need to make sure the virtual model you create is accurate dimensionally. The sketch shown right shows the development of an early idea. It improves for 3D printing by: - adding material between the unsupported top and bottom so that it can actually be 3D printed (without support material) The design also improves by adding a 3mm jack hole so that the cable holds in place. The design also has made a negative change. What is it? Task: Develop your initial ideas, add important annotation about manufacture and function. Make sure your products will 3D print, hold the ear buds securely, and still be attractive.

© 2012 Autodesk 3D Systems Ltd & Teach Design Ltd Develop an idea taking account of CAD Extrude cuts can be made on flat surfaces/planes Holes can be made on surfaces/planes Revolves can be spun on an axis or edge Chamfers or rounds can be applied to edges To develop your initial ideas, you are now going to annotate and sketch improvements to the designs you have, but taking consideration into what tools you will employ in CAD to create the design. The intention is that you will modify your initial idea(s) so that they can be competently modelled in CAD. Your task: To remove all design features that cannot be modelled in CAD, and/or to annotate and identify all the modelling strategies required to create a virtual model of your idea.

Modify and annotate your design ideas taking into account: - the maximum print bed size of the printer - the need for support structures (where undercuts are needed) - the avoidance of undercuts where possible - the need for a raft print on the base (small footprints) - the tolerance of parts (that fit together)
