The Cell Theory All organisms are composed of one or more cells. Cells are the smallest living things. All organisms living today are descendents of an ancestral cell. Cells arise only by division of previously existing cells. The Cell Theory (proposed independently in 1838 and 1839) is a cornerstone of biology.

Functions of Cell Parts Centrioles: Help in cell Division Nucleus: The Control Center of the cell. Endoplasmic Reticulum: A system of canals which Transports substances to the inside of the cell. It is also a chemical Assembly Line. Cell Membrane: Controls what enters and leaves the cell. It contains the cell contents and protects the cell.

Functions of Cell Parts Cytoplasm: The watery fluid which Dissolves the materials which enter the cell. Lysosomes: Dissolves warn out of unneeded cells and cell parts. Digests the materials and bacteria in food vacuoles. Golgi Apparatus: Packages proteins for storage and secretion from the cell.

Functions of Cell Parts Mitochondria: The Powerhouse of the cell. They Burn food to obtain energy for cell activities. Chromatin: Directs cell activities and passes on hereditary traits of the cell. Nucleolus: Makes Ribosomes and stores messages from the chromatin for future use.

Functions of Cell Parts Nuclear Membrane: Separates the nucleus from the cytoplasm. Controls what enters and leaves the nucleus. Ribosomes: Makes Proteins in the cell Protein factories. Vacuoles: Stores food, water and wastes.

Levels of Cellular Organization Cells: The basic unit of all living things. Tissues: Groups of cells working together. Organs: Groups of tissues working together. Organ Systems: Groups of organs working together. Organisms: groups of organ systems working together.
