Statistics In 2005 there were 30,948 teenagers who became pregnant in Canada. Only 16% of teen fathers will live with and help raise their child 30% of pregnant teenagers have an abortion Daughters of teenage mothers are 22% more likely to become teenage mothers themselves 7 out of 10 marriages fail among women who have had a child in their teens Only 1 in 4 teenage mothers actually complete their education

In New Brunswick Teen pregnancy rates have increased from 24.0 in 1000 teenagers in 2007 to 24.3 in 1000 teenagers 2008.

Why not choose abstinence? A study was conducted to recognize the reasons teens choose to have sexual intercourse whether it is protected or unprotected: Fitting In Curiosity Forbidden Partner Pressure Peer Pressure Media

History of Teenage Pregnancy After years of the teenage pregnancy rate slowly declining it is now on the rise again. It is thought to be because of: -Abstinence Programs -“Just say NO” campaign -Lack of knowledge about contraceptives -Pressure from spouses and peers -Lack of communication with family

How to Decrease Teenage Pregnancy Rates Write a list of reasons why they would not want to get pregnant (including how it would affect their plans for their future. Community Involvement Recognize that getting pregnant will not solve any of their problems Be open to talk about any issues that a teenager may have

The Nurses Perspective.. A study showed that often young mothers neglected to receive assistance from the nurses because they felt like they were being judged for being a teenage mother.

Discussion Questions -What do you think is the reason teen girls continue to get pregnant? (Poor morals? Parents not paying attention to th? Alcohol and drugs? The media?) - Does is surprise you that only 16% of teen fathers live with and help raise their child?
