Mark 14: Once more Jesus went away and prayed the same thing. 40 When he came back, he again found the disciples sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. They did not know what to say to him.
41 Returning the third time, he said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The hour has come. Look, the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 42 Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!”
43 Just as he was speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, appeared. With him was a crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests, the teachers of the law, and the elders.
44 Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him and lead him away under guard.” 45 Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Rabbi!” and kissed him.
46 The men seized Jesus and arrested him. 47 Then one of those standing near drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.
48 “Am I leading a rebellion,” said Jesus, “that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? 49 Every day I was with you, teaching in the temple courts, and you did not arrest me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled.” 50 Then everyone deserted him and fled.
Will You Be A Witness? Mark 12 – 16 Being is witness… Can be scary Like in court It can be fun Like telling on you siblings It can also be life changing A product, a doctor or a church
Jesus begins to reveal his identity Jesus gives witness of himself And I doing so guarantees his death
Mark Haven’t you read this scripture: “ ‘The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone; 11 the Lord has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes’?” 12 Then they looked for a way to arrest him because they knew he had spoken the parable against them.
Jesus, preparing us for his death warns us… Others will come saying “I am the Christ” I can save you Only I can save you Only I know the truth
Mark 13 5 Jesus said to them: “Watch out that no one deceives you. 6 Many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am he,’ and will deceive many.
32 “No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 33 Be on guard! Be alert! You do not know when that time will come.
Jesus began to give more hints about his upcoming death A woman anoints him She is the first of many witnesses
Mark 14 8 She did what she could. She poured perfume on my body beforehand to prepare for my burial. 9 I tell you the truth, wherever the gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her.”
We can be disappointing witnesses Peter promised to be a witness But he could not keep his word
30 “I tell you the truth,” Jesus answered, “today—yes, tonight— before the rooster crows twice you yourself will disown me three times.”
We can disappoint completely Judas betrayed Jesus Maybe for money
44 Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him and lead him away under guard.” 45 Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Rabbi!” and kissed him. 46 The men seized Jesus and arrested him.
We can be false witnesses Some testified because they were sure Jesus was a fake They were protecting Israel
56 Many testified falsely against him, but their statements did not agree. 57 Then some stood up and gave this false testimony against him: 58 “We heard him say, ‘I will destroy this man-made temple and in three days will build another, not made by man.’ ” 59 Yet even then their testimony did not agree.
Finally Jesus gives witness himself It was probably the only way they were going to convict him His crime? Identity theft
61 …Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?” 62 “I am,” said Jesus. “And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.” 63 The high priest tore his clothes. “Why do we need any more witnesses?”
Jesus also gives witness himself before Pilate Pilate does not get it What is the crime? Identity theft? Defend yourself
Mark 15 …They bound Jesus, led him away and handed him over to Pilate. 2 “Are you the king of the Jews?” asked Pilate. “Yes, it is as you say,” Jesus replied.
His crime? It was written on the cross “King of the Jews”
Mark It was the third hour when they crucified him. 26 The written notice of the charge against him read: THE KING OF THE JEWS.
Jesus died Was buried The trouble maker was gone! His followers would scatter But they did not understand that there would be more witnesses Angels, women and men
Mark 16 4 But when they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had been rolled away. 5 As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed. 6 “Don’t be alarmed,” he said. “You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here.
Some of us struggle to believe and witness more than others We are not alone We may be like the disciples
14 Later Jesus appeared to the Eleven as they were eating; he rebuked them for their lack of faith and their stubborn refusal to believe those who had seen him after he had risen.
The truth we have a responsibility to share, tell, invite, promote, evangelize, advertize… Yes to be a witness for Jesus
15 He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation.”
We advertize less important things Being a witness for Christ can be life changing One day someone may thank you for saving their very soul “Will you be a witness for my Lord”
