Identifying iPod Models NOTE: ALL RECENT DEVICES SYNC ONLY WITH USB PORTS OF USB 2.0 (not FireWire). Revised May 2008

iPod Scrollwheel iPod (scroll wheel) models have a scroll wheel that physically turns. The controls (Play, Menu, Next, Previous) appear in a circle around the wheel. iPod (scroll wheel) models are referred to as first & second generation iPod models. The second generation had a solid state, scroll wheel Replaced with Newer Model, iPod Classic

iPod Touchwheel The iPod (dock connector) has a touch wheel instead of a Click Wheel and the four control buttons are above the touch wheel. All iPod (touch wheel) models have a FireWire port cover. Scroll wheel models don't, and dock connector models don't have a FireWire port. The iPod (touch wheel) model controls look similar to the iPod (scroll wheel) but the touch wheel itself does not turn. iPod (touch wheel) models are considered third generation models. Replaced with Newer Model, iPod Classic

iPod Clickwheel iPod (Click Wheel) models have a Click Wheel like the iPod mini, but are larger and the hold switch is on the top-right side. iPod (Click Wheel) models have a monochrome display. iPod (Click Wheel) is referred to as the fourth generation iPod. Replaced with Newer Model, iPod Classic

iPod Special Edition U2 The iPod Special Edition U2 has a black plastic exterior, red Click Wheel, signatures of the U2 band members engraved on the back, and "iPod Special Edition U2" engraved on the back. In June 2005 and again in Sept 2006 a new version of the iPod Special Edition U2 was introduced that is an iPod with color display with the same distinctive red and black exterior as before. Since these were during the black & white iPods through the video iPod generation they are considered fourth & fifth generation iPod models. No Longer Available

iPod with Color Display iPod and iPod photo are now one and the same, with every white iPod boasting a full-color display. They continue to have the same controls as iPod (Click Wheel) but now all models have a color display like iPod photo - ideal for viewing album artwork and playing photo slideshows. These are considered fifth generation models along with iPod (Click Wheel). Replaced with Newer Model, iPod Classic

iPod Video This iPod is a a hard drive- based iPod featuring a large, widescreen color display, a Click Wheel, and the capability of displaying photos and videos. Like iPod nano, it uses USB for syncing and comes in white and black. This model was refreshed in Sept 2006 but it was considered an upgrade to a 5.5 generation model. Replaced with Newer Model, iPod Classic

iPod Classic iPod classic gives your music and video room to move. It also has plenty of energy (up to 40 hours of audio playback), good looks (a sleek, all- metal design), and a great personality (a brand-new interface with Cover Flow). The iPod classic replaces all previous full sized iPod models. This particular iPod model is the sixth generation iPod.

New iTouch Flick through album covers and find your music. Download and watch your favorite movies, rentals, TV shows, and more from the iTunes Store. Tap into thousands of photos. All using incredible Multi-Touch touchscreen technology on a beautiful 3.5- inch display.

iPod Mini iPod Mini’s were introduced in January 2004 and were very similar to the monochrome clickwheel iPods, except that the iPod Mini was smaller, came in a variety of colors, and had a smaller hard drive. Replaced with Newer Model, iPod Nano (3 rd generation)

iPod Shuffle The original iPod shuffle was smaller than the iPod mini and had no display. There were LED lights on the front and back. The capacity of the drive was engraved on the front USB connector. This is the first generation shuffle. Replaced with Newer Model The second generation shuffle was much smaller than its previous model. This shuffle was smaller with more memory 1 GB.

New iPod Shuffle In a 1GB model and a new 2GB model, iPod shuffle lets you wear up to 500 songs on your sleeve, or your lapel, or your belt. Clip on the iPod shuffle and wear it as a badge of musical devotion. These models represent the third generation.

iPod Nano iPod nano is smaller than iPod mini and has a color screen and a Click Wheel but has flash memory instead of a hard drive. Song and photo syncing only occurs over USB 2 (not FireWire). Originally the iPod nano came in white and black. Replaced with Newer Model In September 2006, Apple replaced the original iPod nano with a more rugged, aluminum-clad second generation model. The 2G nano remained tiny, gained a brighter screen and improved battery life, and was available in three capacities and six colors: 2 GB silver; 4 GB blue, green, pink, and silver; and 8 GB black.

iPod Nano It’s the small iPod with one very big idea: Video. Now the world’s most popular music player, available in 4GB and 8GB models, lets you enjoy TV shows, movies, video podcasts, and more. The larger, brighter display means amazing picture quality. In six eye-catching colors, iPod nano is stunning all around. Notice the smaller and slightly wider form factor. This is the 3 rd generation model.
