Supplementary Quarantine Requirements on Logs Exported to China from Virginia and South Carolina The American logs exported to China should also meet the following supplementary quarantine requirements besides complying with the U.S. quarantine requirements: General Requirements: The American logs exported to China should not carry quarantine pests concerned by the Chinese sides. Supplementary Quarantine Requirements on VA & SC Logs

Quarantine on Pine Wood Nematode At the log yard for exportation, the cargo owner and inspector should inspect all the goods of each shipment and remove the logs with pests and blue stain. Sampling requirement: (A). Use inch drill to take a sample at the positions of 4-6 inches away from the both ends of the logs. The depth of drill sampling is 4 inches. The speed of the drill should be slow when taking samples so as to avoid overheat killing the pine wood nematode. (B). Mix well the samples taken from two logs, then take one fourth of them to make a mixed sample. The weight of each sample is about 200 g. (C).The total samples from each shipment of logs is not less than 12. (D). The sample should be kept in a sealed plastic bag, stored at room temperature after moisturizing and promptly send to the designated laboratory for pine wood nematode testing. Sampling for pine wood nematode should try to be completed at the timber yard. Supplementary Quarantine Requirements on VA & SC Logs

Quarantine Fumigation of Logs Please provide the list of fumigation treatment industries examined/checked and recognized by APHIS. The current fumigation index of methyl bromide implemented by the U.S. side is: Ambient temperature 5 ℃ -15 ℃, the dose of the initial concentration of methyl bromide 120 g / m 3, the enclosure time is at least 16 hours; ambient temperature above 15 ℃, the methyl bromide dose of initial concentration of 80 g / m 3, the enclosure time is at least 16 hours. Practice has proved that the enclosure fumigation time is not enough. It is recommended that the U.S. side extends the methyl bromide fumigation enclosure time to more than 24 hours in order to enhance the effect of fumigation. Since the debarking process cannot effectively kill the spreading media of pine wood nematode in softwood logs, the U.S. side should implement fumigation for softwood logs. Phytosanitary Certificate The Additional Declaration of the Phytosanitary Certificate issued by APHIS should note that “This shipment does not carry pine wood nematode.” And the name of fumigation treatment industry should also be noted. Ports of Entry for Pilot Import Program Effective June 1, 2012, logs departing from Virginia and South Carolina must enter into China through the ports of Waigaoqiao (Shanghai), Yangshan (Shanghai) or Taicang (Jiangsu).
